Round 21 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
Merrin grits her teeth, dark energy from her wound seeping into the barrier field. The pain is excruciating but she must focus. "We need to act fast before this darkness consumes me completely!" She cries out, her voice echoing off the crumbling stone tower walls.
The halfling rogue's eyes dart between the ancient rune-covered gate and her companions, searching for a solution. Her mind races with possibilities even as fear threatens to overwhelm her. "Jeane, can you find a way to counter this field's magic? Seraphine, what do the runes mean? And Elric - if you know something about this barrier, now would be a good time to speak up!"
Merrin shifts her weight, trying to ignore the searing pain in her leg. She tightens her grip on her crossbow, ready to fire at the slightest provocation. "We're all in danger here. But I refuse to let some cursed magic take me down without a fight." She draws a shaky breath, steeling herself for whatever comes next.
Merrin glances at Halie, seeing the concern etched on her face. She gives a weak smile, trying to project more confidence than she feels. "Thanks for having my back, Halie. Let's see if we can turn this situation around before it's too late." With that, the halfling rogue turns her attention back to the barrier field, determined to find a way through or around it, no matter the cost.
I crouch before the ancient runes, tracing their edges with my eyes. The symbols pulse like infected veins beneath my gaze—these aren't mere warnings, they're alive. Merrin's wound pulses in sync with them now, her blood singing a dark melody to something buried deep within this stone. I draw symbols of banishment in the air, mutter words that scorch my tongue, but the field doesn't attack back. It just... waits. The runes displayed their warning: 'Shadow's grasp, darkness' key'—they mean this thing feeds on pain and fear, draws its power from suffering itself. Merrin is being used as a conduit, her injury bleeding into the barrier like a sacrifice to some forgotten god of decay. I need more information, and fast. Elric, if you know anything about this field—I don't care what it is or how you learned it—now would be an excellent time to share. Before my little rogue becomes just another stain on these cursed stones.
I yanked Merrin back from the gate’s edge just as the runes pulsed again. The air around those ancient symbols feels wrong—alive somehow. “Elric!” My voice cut through the tension between us. “What the hell is this field and why hasn’t it killed us yet?”
The air around the ancient gate is heavy, thick with an unnatural, malevolent presence. The runes etched into its surface pulse with a dark, insistent energy that seems to resonate deep within my bones. Merrin's agonized scream tears through the oppressive silence, a chilling reminder of just how close we are to losing her.
I take a cautious step forward, my eyes fixed on the barrier field shimmering before us. It’s not simply a magical construct; it has a life of its own, a hungry, predatory intent that chills me to the core. The runes on the gate seem to writhe under my gaze, each one a tiny eye watching our every move.
"By the gods," I mutter, my voice so low it's nearly inaudible. "This... this isn't just a ward. It's alive."
The thought sends a wave of icy dread through me. Living magic is dangerous, unpredictable. It cares nothing for us, only for its own malevolent purpose. And right now, that purpose seems to be consuming Merrin's very essence.
"I need to get closer," I say, more to myself than anyone else. My heart hammers against my ribs as I force my trembling legs to move. One foot, then the other, each step an act of sheer willpower as the barrier field seems to call out to me, promising a darkness I dare not face.
As I near the threshold, the energy becomes almost tangible, a thick, choking mist that clings to my skin like oil. It feels wrong, tainted by some deep corruption that makes my stomach turn. Yet, beneath this repulsion, a morbid fascination holds me captive. What kind of magic is this? Who could have created such a thing?
I raise a hand, hesitating just before the shimmering barrier. The runes on my fingers, symbols of power and protection, feel suddenly hollow, useless against whatever force lies beyond. With a deep breath, I press my palm flat against the invisible wall.
The contact sends a jolt through me, a shock of cold that freezes me to the marrow. A vision flashes before my eyes—a dark figure, cloaked and faceless, standing before an altar covered in strange symbols. They chant words of power, and the air itself seems to bleed into the earth, creating this thing, this monster.
"Shadow's grasp, darkness' key," I whisper, the cryptic phrase from the runes echoing in my mind with new meaning. This wasn't just a lock; it was a prison wearing a crown of thorns. And Merrin... she was becoming its key.
A sudden scream rips me from my trance. I look up to see Halie wrestling with Merrin, trying desperately to pull her away from the barrier's edge. The halfling is thrashing wildly, her eyes glassy with pain and fear. The wound on her leg has begun to ooze a thick, black substance that seems to be pulling her inexorably toward the gate.
"Jeane!" I cry out, my voice finally finding its strength. "We need to find the key! This field is feeding off Merrin's injury!"
But even as I speak, I know it’s too late. The barrier has already begun its work, its dark intent clear as day. And if we can't stop it... Merrin will be lost to us forever.
