The barrier field crackled with malevolent energy, its ancient runes pulsing in syncopated rhythm as if the stone itself breathed. Jeane crouched low before it, tracing the symbols with crimson eyes but never letting her fingers near the cursed surface. The dark liquid oozing from Merrin's leg had transformed into something otherworldly—shadow given physical form, crawling across the ground like a thousand tiny serpents seeking reunion with its source at the gate.

Halie yanked Merrin back by the shoulders, her friend's leg still bleeding profusely. The air around those ancient symbols felt wrong—alive somehow, but in a way that made Halie's skin crawl and her stomach twist. She turned to Elric, voice sharp with barely contained panic. "Explain this field NOW! What the hell is it and why hasn't it killed us yet?"

Across from them, Seraphine stood frozen, her sharp eyes fixed on the rune-etched gate. The air crackled around her, thick with an ancient, malevolent power that raised the hairs on her arms. Her mind raced, trying to decipher the meaning behind those writhing symbols—this was no mere decoration, it was alive. Cursed.

Merrin's scream tore through the heavy silence of the tower. Seraphine whirled to see Halie dragging their halfling friend back from the brink, where dark tendrils of energy were already coiling around her leg. The wound. It was pulling at her.

"Dark magic," she muttered under her breath, already reaching for her spell components. "I need to understand this field's mechanics before we can counter it." The runes pulsed again, and a fresh wave of malevolent energy washed over them all. Whatever bound Merrin's leg to the gate wasn't going to let go easily.

Jeane's voice cut through the tension like a blade. "This thing wants to pull her inside, piece by piece. Look at those symbols—they're not just decorative, they're instructions." She gestured sharply at the writhing lines of the barrier field. "Each one moves when we speak or approach, and now it's feeding on Merrin. We need to break its connection before she's absorbed completely."

Halie's grip tightened on Merrin's shoulders, her friend's body growing colder by the second. The dark tendrils had spread further up her thigh, blackening her skin as they went. "Elric!" Halie snapped, voice sharp enough to cut glass. "Talk to me right now—what the fuck did you lead us into here? What do these symbols mean?"

The ancient runes pulsed in response to her outburst, each symbol seeming to writhe with renewed vigor. A low hum emanated from the stone gate—a sound like a thousand voices whispering just beyond hearing. Elric took a hesitant step back, his eyes wide with alarm. "I... I didn't know it was this powerful," he stammered, clearly shaken. "The stories said the tower was cursed, but not that it could..."

Seraphine cut him off with a sharp gesture. "Stories are worthless now—we need answers." She stepped closer to the gate, eyes narrowed in concentration as she studied the writhing symbols. The air around her hand crackled with arcane energy as she extended her palm toward one of the runes, testing its resistance.

The moment her power made contact with the stone, a jolt of dark energy slammed into her, sending a visible shockwave through her body. Seraphine gasped, her eyes rolling back in her head as her consciousness was... pulled... outward and downward. Into darkness.

Jeane watched in horrified fascination as Seraphine's body went rigid, her outstretched hand still pressed against Merrin's wound. The air around them crackled with arcane energy, the writhing symbols on the gate pulsing with renewed fury as if awakened by the intrusion. She moved to catch the wizard as she stumbled backward, but Seraphine remained standing, eyes closed in concentration.

"What... what's happening?" Halie whispered, clutchting Merrin tighter as she watched her friend's body convulse slightly.

Jeane helped support Seraphine's swaying form, one arm wrapped around the wizard's waist to keep her upright. "I think... I think she's succeeded," she said slowly, voice tight with apprehension. "She's made the connection—her consciousness is inside Merrin now."

The air around them seemed to thicken and distort as if reality itself bent under the strain of Seraphine's arcane manipulation. The gate's runes pulsed in sync with her labored breathing, each symbol seeming to writhe with renewed hunger. And then, as if spoken by the wind itself, a voice echoed through the tower—low and malevolent, resonating deep within their bones.

TWO MINDS... BUT STILL NOT ENOUGH... THE KEY REMAINS UNTURNED.

Everyone froze, the words hanging heavy in the suddenly silent air. Jeane felt a cold dread settle into her stomach as she stared at Seraphine's trembling form. This entity was... aware of what was happening? Could it sense their actions somehow?

What have we gotten ourselves into? she thought desperately. If this thing can track Seraphine's movements inside Merrin's mind, then it knows exactly what we're trying to do.

Halie clutched Merrin tighter, torn between desperate hope and crippling fear. "Please," she whispered, more to any deity who might be listening than to her companions. "Please, let this work."

Jeane helped support Seraphine's swaying form, one arm wrapped around the wizard's waist to keep her upright as her friend's consciousness projected into Merrin's mind. The air around them crackled with arcane energy, the writhing symbols on the gate pulsing with renewed fury as if awakened by the intrusion.

This is insanity, Jeane thought desperately. We're essentially gambling with two lives instead of just one. If Seraphine fails...

The very air seemed to thicken and distort as reality itself bent under the strain of Seraphine's arcane manipulation. The gate's runes pulsed in sync with her labored breathing, each symbol seeming to writhe with renewed hunger. And then, as if spoken by the wind itself, a voice echoed through the tower—low and malevolent, resonating deep within their bones.
