The ancient stone gate stood as a silent guardian at the base of the crumbling tower, its surface covered in intricate runes that seemed to glow faintly in the dappled forest light. The air around it shimmered with residual magic, thick and resistant to casual touch.

Halie moved closer, her heavy mace held loosely but ready for immediate action. "Wait," she said, her voice steady despite the apprehension tightening her jaw. "The barrier around this gate... it's not natural decay." She met Seraphine's eyes across the stone divide. "Those runes aren't just symbols—they're holding something back. Or keeping something in." Her gaze shifted to Merrin and Varrika. "Let Seraphine work on the lock, but we all stay here until she gives the all-clear."

Jeane approached Elric with a predatory grace, her crimson eyes fixed on his face. "Those runes aren't merely decorative," she said, her voice cool and laced with steel. "And I doubt this barrier is meant as a welcome mat." She traced one of the glowing symbols, feeling its pulse beneath her fingertips. "What exactly are we dealing with here? Don't make me pry the answer from you, old man—it won't be pleasant for either of us."

Merrin stepped closer to examine the runes, her heart pounding. Seraphine was right—the marks were no mere decorations. The air felt heavy, charged with ancient magic she couldn't begin to understand. She traced a rune with a finger, feeling a strange tingle.

Seraphine traced her fingers over the cool, worn stone of the gate, feeling the intricate patterns of the runes etched into its surface. The magic trapped within this barrier was ancient and powerful, testing her resolve even before they passed through. Each rune seemed to pulse with a faint, ethereal light as she studied them, their purpose still a mystery that demanded unraveling.

The forest around them remained unnaturally quiet, the usual sounds of wildlife absent. Something old and hungry waited beyond that gate, and the weight of centuries pressed in on them all.
