Narrator · Narrator

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step closer, my heavy mace held loosely but ready. "Wait." The air around the gate feels wrong—viscous, resisting. Magic I don't understand is layered thick here. Those runes aren't just symbols, they're holding... something back. Or keeping something in. I meet Seraphine's eyes across the stone barrier. "We should approach this carefully. That barrier isn't natural decay. It's active magic." My gaze shifts to Merrin and Varrika. "Let Seraphine work on the lock, but we all stay here until she gives the signal. No one touches those stones without knowing what they do."

I turn back to Elric, my expression serious. "You said this place was dangerous. Now you're telling us there's a barrier that doesn't show on any map? That sounds like something that requires more than just 'stay alert.' What exactly is this barrier supposed to be, and why hasn't it killed us all already?"

I'm not accusing him—I genuinely want to understand—but my hand tightens slightly on the mace. We're standing at the threshold of a place that clearly wants to stay sealed. And now we're about to force our way in. The weight of centuries presses down, and I feel the familiar stirrings of corruption trying to latch onto us through the barrier. My goddess's symbol warms against my chest, but it's a small comfort against whatever lies beyond this gate.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane Cromwell stepped closer to Elric, her voice cool but laced with steel. 'Those runes aren't merely decorative, and I doubt this barrier is meant as a welcome mat. What exactly are we dealing with here? Don't make me pry the answer from you, old man—it won't be pleasant for either of us.' She traced one of the glowing symbols, feeling its pulse beneath her fingertips. 'And what did you mean by phantom caresses? Speak plainly before I decide this reward isn't worth your cryptic warnings.'

She turned to Merrin and Seraphine, already working on the lock. 'If those runes respond to magic, be careful how you probe them. We don't need the gate collapsing or summoning whatever guardians are supposed to protect this place.' Her eyes flicked back to Elric, her expression hard. 'You have until they crack that lock to explain why you're so terrified of something no one else seems to notice.'

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step closer to examine the runes, my heart pounding. Seraphine's right - these marks are no mere decorations. The air feels heavy, charged with ancient magic. I trace a rune with a finger, feeling a strange tingle.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I trace my fingers over the cool, worn stone of the gate, feeling the intricate patterns of the runes etched into its surface. The magic trapped within this barrier is ancient and powerful, testing my resolve even before we pass through. Each rune seems to pulse with a faint, ethereal light as I study them, their purpose still a mystery that demands unraveling.
"I have never seen such workmanship on an ordinary locking mechanism," I murmur, more to myself than to the others. Merrin approaches, her own keen eyes scanning the runes. "These are no mere decorations, I think to myself, my mind already racing through theories on how they function. They must serve a purpose far greater than simply barring entry."
My gaze drifts from the gate to the shadowed entrance beyond, where the darkness of the tower yawns like an abyss waiting to swallow us whole. A shiver traces its way down my spine, born not of cold but of a deep-seated fear of the unknown power we are about to confront. The stories Elric told were grim enough, tales of dark sorcery and twisted entities bound within these walls, but now, with the physical proof of their magic laid bare before us, reality feels far more immediate and perilous.
