Round 89 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin tends to her injured knee, Halie's cries for help grow more desperate. The air seems to thicken, and the whispers in the passage intensify, making it difficult for anyone to think clearly. Suddenly, a chunk of rubble shifts, and Halie's voice is cut off by the sound of falling stone. Merrin's eyes widen as she realizes that Halie must be trapped beneath the rubble. She frantically searches for any tool that could aid in the rescue, but her hands are shaking, and her vision blurs at the edges. The sigils on the walls pulse with an otherworldly energy, making it hard to focus. Seraphine's voice cuts through the chaos, "We need to stabilize the rubble! Halie, can you give me a hand sign or something?"
Jeane steps forward, her crimson eyes scanning the pulsing sigils that coat the walls of the collapsed corridor. The air tastes foul—like copper and decay—and every rune in this section is screaming at her not to touch them. "Stop right there!" she commands sharply as Merrin starts to move toward Halie. "The energy here is ancient and malevolent. One wrong step could trigger something we can't stop."
She extends her hands, dark magic swirling around her fingertips as she begins casting a detection spell. The arcane energy probes the stonework, seeking hidden pathways or structural weaknesses that might offer an alternative route to the upper levels without triggering whatever lies ahead. "There's a pocket of space beyond this wall," she mutters, pointing to the left side of the corridor. "It might lead around the worst of it."
"Halie's trapped!" Merrin protests, her voice thick with panic. "We can't just leave her there!"
"We're not leaving her," Jeane snaps, though her tone carries more concern than anger. She turns to Seraphine. "Can you stabilize that rubble without disturbing the runes? And Merrin—you need to let Halie tend to your knee before infection sets in." Her eyes narrow as she studies the crumbling stones around them. "This whole place is coming down around our ears. We need to move fast and smart, not just rush in."
Jeane begins preparing a series of counter-spells, inscribing arcane symbols on her palms that will provide temporary protection against psychic assaults and minor demonic influence. The foul aura emanating from the sigils makes her skin crawl—this is old dark magic, powerful and hungry. "Seraphine," she calls out, "keep an eye on our supplies while you work. We might need to move quickly if this structure fails completely." To Varrika: "Can you and Merrin clear a path for us? We'll need to get Halie out of there once Seraphine stabilizes the rubble."
The whispers in the air grow louder, carrying suggestions of pain and despair. Jeane ignores them—she's faced worse temptations in her time—but keeps her guard up. Something ancient sleeps down here, something that doesn't want them to leave. "We proceed carefully," she announces to the group. "Merrin, rest your knee. Seraphine, work on Halie and the rubble. Varrika and I will clear a path through this mess." Her voice carries the weight of command, but beneath it lies genuine concern for her companions—as much as a demonic sorceress is capable of, anyway. Jeane's hand hovers near her mace, ready to draw at the first sign of real threat. The air grows colder, and she knows they're running out of time.
I step back from the archway, my heart pounding against my ribs as the malevolent energy pulses in time with my breath. The air here is thick, heavy with the scent of old stone and something darker, more primal. It clings to my skin like a physical weight.
My eyes dart over the runes etched into the ancient stone, their patterns seeming to writhe under my gaze. They're not just old magic; they're alive, hungry, waiting for us to blunder into their trap.
Merrin's pained cry cuts through the heavy air, a jarring reminder of the immediate danger we face. I turn to see Varrika already moving, her hand on the hilt of her sword as she assesses the situation with a warrior's keen eye. "We must act quickly," I say, my voice low and urgent. It's a statement, not a question. The longer we remain here, exposed to this foul presence, the greater the risk of something far worse befalling us. I take a slow breath, trying to calm the frantic hammering in my chest. This is what I trained for, what I studied for. Ancient magic, dark sorceries... these are the very things that define my existence as a scholar of forbidden lore. Yet now, faced with it, a part of me wishes for something simpler, less terrifyingly powerful.
My fingers twitch, instinctively wanting to reach for my spellbook, to prepare a counter-spell against whatever horrors might emerge from this place. But I know better than to act without thought. One wrong word, one misplaced gesture, could unleash a storm we would never survive.
"The runes," I murmur, more to myself than to anyone else. "They're the key. We need to find a way past them without triggering their power."
Varrika surveys the crumbling stone tower, her experienced eye taking in every detail. The air feels thick and oppressive, tinged with an unsettling energy that prickles at her skin. She knows they're treading on dangerous ground here. Her gaze falls on Merrin, struggling to free Halie from the rubble. "Hold steady there, lass," Varrika calls out, her gruff voice cutting through the tension. "I'm coming to help." She strides over, heavy mace at the ready, prepared to shift stones or battle whatever horrors might emerge. But as she nears, the whispers grow louder in her ears, like a thousand voices clawing at the edges of her mind. Varrika grits her teeth, fighting down a wave of nausea. This place... it's wrong. Ancient and malevolent, just as Halie warned. She glances back at the group, her eyes meeting Jeane's. The sorcerer looks rattled, but determined. Varrika gives a curt nod. They'll find a way through this. They have to. Turning back to the rubble, Varrika plants her feet and grips her mace tighter. "On my mark," she barks to Merrin. "We'll shift these stones together. Halie, can you tell us where you are?"
The dwarf warrior takes a deep breath, steeling herself against the gnawing unease. They're in for a fight, but Varrika's seen her share of battles. She'll be damned if she lets this tower best them. As she waits for Merrin's response, Varrika's mind races, weighing their options. The path ahead is treacherous, but there's no going back now. Only forward, into the heart of darkness, to claim the prize and survive the horrors that lurk within these ancient walls.
