Seraphine's keen elven eyes scanned the interior of The base of a crumbling stone tower with practiced caution, her sharp gaze lingering on every shadow and crevice where danger might lurk. The air here felt wrong in a way she couldn't quite articulate—a palpable malevolence that seemed to cling to the very stones themselves, seeping into the ancient mortar between them like spectral moisture. She could feel it pressing against her skin, making her breath catch despite her best efforts at composure.

The wizard took a step forward, her elegant robes whispering softly against the stone floor as she moved closer to examine the wall carving Merrin had discovered. The intricate sigils etched into the rock pulsed with an inner light that made her stomach twist with unease—this was no mere artistic flourish or decorative element. No, these were containment runes, and they were failing.

The realization struck her like a physical blow: this entire corridor was a sealed tomb, and something inside had begun to awaken. The very thought sent a shiver down her spine, and she found herself reaching instinctively for the comforting weight of her spellbook clutched beneath one arm.

"Halt," she commanded, her voice cutting through the oppressive silence with surprising authority. "We cannot proceed down this corridor—not yet." Her gaze swept across the faces of her companions, noting the mixture of apprehension and barely restrained excitement that played across their features. They were all tired, yes, but the thrill of potential discovery still pulsed beneath the surface.

"I can feel it too," Jeane admitted, her crimson eyes narrowing as she focused on the pulsing runes. "The corruption here is ancient—older than any of us save perhaps myself—and it's leaking out like... like a wound that refuses to close." The succubus sorcerer extended one hand, fingers splayed, and a faint arcane light danced between them in response to the ambient energies swirling through the corridor. "Those containment sigils aren't holding—they're fighting against a breaking force from inside. If we proceed down this corridor, we'll be walking into a death trap, and not the kind where we get to swing our swords dramatically at undead horrors. We'd be drowning in pure magical contamination."

Halie stepped forward then, her blue-grey eyes wide with concern as she held her silver cross high, letting its blessed light spill across Merrin's face and the pulsating wall carving behind her. The wrongness pressed against her skin like physical weight—this wasn't just unnatural energy, it was reality bleeding through at a wound where something fundamental had broken.

"Merrin," she said, her voice steady despite the dread coiling in her stomach, "step back from that carving. I don't know what it is, but it feels like a rotting tooth—if you prod it too much, the infection might spread."
