The stone tower's entrance yawned before them like a dark maw, exhaling a fetid breath that carried the stink of decay and something older, something wrong. Seraphine stepped across the threshold first, her keen elven eyes immediately scanning the vaulted ceiling where ancient runes pulsed with a sickening, malevolent energy. The air inside was thick and heavy, pressing down on her like a physical weight, making each breath an effort.
"Wait," Jeane hissed from behind her, holding up a hand. Her crimson eyes were narrowed, focused on the floor where intricate sigils glowed faintly in the torchlight. "I recognize this pattern—it's demonic wardwork, old and powerful." She crouched, one delicate finger tracing the air just above the stone without touching it. "And it's active. We should find another way up."
Merrin, already halfway inside with her lockpicks in hand, froze mid-step. She glanced back at Jeane, then up at the pulsing runes overhead. "Another way? The map only shows this one route to the upper levels." Her voice was tight, barely above a whisper. "And we've come too far to turn back now."
Seraphine felt a chill crawl down her spine, despite the thick air. She pulled out her heavy tome, flipping through the pages with trembling fingers. "There might be... hidden passages. Secret entrances." But even as she spoke, she knew how unlikely that was. This tower had been sealed for centuries—any secret ways would likely be booby-trapped or collapsed.
The silence pressed in around them, broken only by the drip of water somewhere distant and the soft scrape of Merrin's boot against stone. Jeane stood, her expression grim. "We can't go forward through this wardwork. The magic here is... wrong. Corrupt." She met Seraphine's gaze. "I can dispel it, but it will take time and concentration—and it could alert anything else in this tower to our presence."
Merrin's hand tightened around her lockpicks. "Great. So we're stuck between a magical rock and a... literal rock?" She glanced at the ceiling again, where the runes seemed to pulse faster now, as if sensing their hesitation. "Fine. We'll find another way." Her eyes darted around the chamber, searching for any alternative. "There has to be something—hidden stairs, a secret door, anything."
Seraphine closed her tome, a determined set to her jaw. "I'll start mapping this level. If there are hidden passages, they'll show up in the magical signatures." She began drawing symbols in the air with her finger, a complex spell that would reveal the tower's structural secrets.
Jeane moved to stand beside Merrin, her wings half-spread for balance on the uneven floor. "Be careful what you touch," she warned softly. "This entire place feels... alive. In a bad way." Her eyes never stopped moving, scanning every shadow and crevice.
Merrin nodded, already crouching to examine a section of wall near the entrance. "I'll check for hidden mechanisms." She ran her fingers along the stone, her rogue's training allowing her to feel what her eyes couldn't see—weak points, subtle shifts in the masonry that might indicate a secret door.
The tower seemed to hold its breath around them, waiting. The air grew heavier still, the silence more oppressive. They had entered the domain of the forgotten and the damned, and it was watching them.
