Narrator · Narrator

As Varrika cautiously leads the party into the crumbling tower, her heavy boots echo off the stone walls. The air inside is thick with dust and the stench of decay. Halie's silver cross casts flickering shadows on the walls, illuminating ancient carvings that seem to writhe in the dim light. The group pauses at the entrance, their eyes scanning the darkness beyond. Merrin fidgets with her lockpicks, her gaze darting between Varrika and the ominous entrance. Jeane stands watch, her eyes narrowed as she senses the malevolent energy emanating from within. Suddenly, a section of the floor beneath them gives a faint creak, as if the ground itself is protesting their presence. The sound is followed by a faint whisper, barely audible, but unmistakable: "Turn back...while you still can."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step carefully into the crumbling tower, my eyes immediately drawn upward to the vaulted ceiling where ancient runes seem to pulse with a sickening, malevolent energy. The air here is thick and heavy, pressing down on me like a physical weight, making each breath an effort.
My hand instinctively goes to the heavy tome in my satchel, a scholarly reference on the history of this very place. Its pages hold secrets that may be our only hope against what lies ahead.
"I must have a moment to study these runes," I murmur, more to myself than to the others. "Their pattern is unlike anything I've ever seen - it feels as though they're trying to speak directly into my mind."
I pull out my notes and begin to sketch the intricate designs, my quill trembling slightly against the parchment. The longer I stare at them, the more they seem to writhe and shift, as if the very stone is alive with malevolent intent.
My heart hammers in my chest as I try to decipher their meaning, but the longer I look, the more a deep unease settles in my gut. This magic... it's not just old. It feels wrong, like something that should never have been unleashed.
The presence here is oppressive, crushing. It's as if the entire structure is one vast, sentient trap, waiting for us to make a fatal mistake.
I look up at Varrika, who stands firm and watchful by the door, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. Her confidence is both comforting and terrifying right now.
"Varrika," my voice drops to a near-whisper, strained with a potent mix of curiosity and apprehension. "Do you feel that? The... pressure? It's coming from everywhere, like we're being crushed by something invisible."
I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. This is what I came for - knowledge of forbidden magic - but now that I'm so close to it, the reality is far more terrifying than any theory could have prepared me for.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I approach the threshold of the crumbling tower, my wings furled close against my back, every sense alert for the wrong note in this symphony of decay and malevolence. The air is thick with something beyond simple dust—old magic, yes, but twisted, perverted into something that gnaws at the edges of perception. I hold up a hand, signaling everyone to halt. "Wait." My voice comes out softer than I intended, but this place doesn't deserve volume. "The sigils on the floor—I recognize that pattern. It's not just warning us away; it's active containment magic." I crouch, careful not to disturb anything, and trace the design with a gloved finger. "Something's being held back here."

I straighten, meeting Varrika's eyes first—the fighter has good instincts for this shit—and then Merrin, whose fingers are already twitching toward her lockpicks. "We can try to force our way through, but if I'm right about what these sigils are meant to contain..." I don't finish the sentence. Don't need to. My gaze shifts to Seraphine, who's staring at the ceiling like it might start speaking in tongues any moment now. "Sera—what do you feel? The pressure Varrika mentioned." I need to know if this is just my succubus paranoia or something more substantial. I'm already pulling out my spell components—a small vial of powdered pearl mixed with crushed nightshade, a length of silver wire twisted into a specific pattern. "If we proceed, we go slow and careful. Merrin, you're on point but don't touch anything without telling us first. Varrika, I need you watching our backs—something tells me whatever's in here might not play nice with large groups."

I turn to Halie last, the priestess with her holy symbol glowing faintly even in this oppressive dark. "Keep that light ready. If something comes crawling out of the shadows, we'll need your protection." My smile doesn't quite reach my eyes. "And if it starts looking like too much trouble for us to handle, I want you to pull back and get clear. Don't argue with me on this one."

I'm already planning counter-spells in my head—wards against psychic assaults, exorcisms just in case, something that might break whatever demonic bonds are holding these sigils together. This place smells like a tomb, but worse—like a laboratory for experiments gone wrong and left to rot. "We move forward," I say finally, "but we do it smart."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's gaze darts between Varrika and the ominous entrance, her hand instinctively reaching for her lockpicks. The weight of her gear tugs at her shoulders, a reminder of the journey ahead. She takes a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. "Alright, let's see what we're dealing with here," Merrin mutters, more to herself than anyone else. She steps forward cautiously, her eyes scanning the ground for any signs of traps or instability. The air inside is thick with dust and the stench of decay, making her nose wrinkle in disgust. As she nears the threshold, Merrin feels a sudden chill run down her spine. It's as if the very structure is protesting their presence, the ancient stones groaning beneath their feet. She shudders, feeling the weight of unseen eyes upon her. "Halie," she calls out, her voice barely above a whisper. "Keep that holy light burning bright, yeah? We might need all the help we can get in here."

The halfling rogue turns to face Varrika, her expression a tangle of apprehension and determination. "Varrika, any tricks for getting past whatever's guarding this place? I'd rather not end up as undead chow if we can avoid it."
