The air in the corridor grew heavier with each passing moment, pressing down on them like a physical weight. The pulsing green light from the walls cast everything in an unnatural glow, shadows dancing and twisting in ways that had nothing to do with the movement of their bodies. Halie stepped forward cautiously, her holy symbol held out before her like a shield against the oppressive magic that saturated the stone. "These runes," she said, her voice tight with barely contained fear, "they're not just old magic. They're feeding something." Her blue-grey eyes scanned the corridor, taking in every detail with a cleric's trained perception. "Jeane's right. Something fed here, long and dark." She took another step forward, the stone under her boots groaning softly in protest. "I can feel it trying to push back against us."

Jeane moved closer to examine the pulsing sigils, her wings shifting uneasily as she fought against the urge to simply fly away from this place of ancient malevolence. The magic here was wrong on a fundamental level—something ancient and hungry slept within these walls, something that shouldn't exist in their world anymore. She could feel it, a cold dread settling into her bones. "We can't afford to trigger whatever trap Varrika almost fell into," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. The ground is unstable everywhere now—not just near the hidden doorway." She gestured for Merrin to stay back, her crimson eyes locked on the pulsing runes. "Find another way up if you can, but be careful. I don't trust anything in this tower."

Merrin's gaze snapped wide as Varrika plunged down the hidden stairs, her heart pounding with adrenaline and fear. "Blast it all!" she hissed, her nimble fingers already tracing the stonework, searching for traps or secret levers. "Halie, any other ways up you can sense?" The halfling's alert dark eyes darted around the corridor, taking in every potential escape route. "Because if this tower's got more surprises like that, I'm voting we find a new line of work."
