The tower's air was a physical presence now, thick and resisting, tasting of decay and ancient malice that soaked into the bones. Seraphine drew breath in shallow sips, feeling the weight of it settle on her chest. Her robes offered little defense against this particular chill—it came from within the stone itself.
Jeane's voice cut through the heavy silence, sharp with warning. "Wait." She stepped closer to the pulsing runes on the walls, her wings shifting uneasily. The magic here was wrong, dark and hungry in a way she'd never encountered before. It felt like standing next to an open grave, or worse—a place where graves were dug fresh every night.
Merrin crouched by the hidden doorway, her fingers tracing the frame with practiced ease. She could sense the history here, layers of magic and violence built up over centuries. But there was something else too—a freshness to the corruption that made her skin crawl. This wasn't just old evil; someone had been tending these traps recently.
Seraphine spoke next, her voice tight with controlled fear. "This place... it's alive in a way it shouldn't be." She pressed a hand against the wall, feeling the faint pulse beneath her palm. "The magic isn't dormant—it's breathing. And I don't think it wants us here."
Jeane nodded slowly, her crimson eyes fixed on the dangerous sigils. "Halie, can you sense any clean pathways? Any way through this corridor that doesn't involve tripping whatever nightmare those runes are guarding?" Her fingers sparked faintly with gathered power, a defensive reflex rather than a conscious spell.
Merrin stood, dusting off her hands. "I don't see any obvious traps on the door itself," she reported, her voice low. "But that doesn't mean there aren't hidden ones. The real question is—do we even need to go this way? Can't we find another route up?"
The tower seemed to hold its breath around them, waiting for their decision. The air grew heavier still, pressing down with the weight of centuries and whatever horrors lurked beyond the pulsing runes.
