As Varrika moves forward, the creaking stone beneath her feet groans in protest, causing the air to vibrate with an ominous energy. The pulsing runes on the walls seem to intensify, bathing the corridor in a sickly green light that casts eerie shadows on the walls. Suddenly, the ground gives way beneath Varrika's feet, and she feels herself sliding down a hidden staircase, her mace flying from her grasp as she tumbles into darkness. The sound of crashing stone echoes through the corridor, and the air is filled with the acrid scent of dust and decay. The runes on the walls seem to pulse in time with the chaos, their malevolent energy coursing through the air like a living thing. Jeane's eyes widen as she rushes forward, her hands outstretched in a desperate attempt to grab Varrika before she falls further into the darkness.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Halie's voice is soft but firm. "We can't go further without checking this thoroughly." She pulls out her holy symbol, lets its silver edge catch the dim light. "These runes—they're not just old magic. They're feeding something." Her blue-grey eyes scan the corridor with a cleric's focus. "Jeane's right. Something fed here, long and dark." She steps forward carefully, the stone under her boots groaning softly. "I can feel it trying to push back against us."

"I'm not saying turn back," she clarifies, seeing Merrin tense up, "but we need a moment to purify this space, cleanse these sigils if we can." Her fingers tighten around the symbol. "Varrika's our strength, but I won't let her walk into a cursed death trap because we were too hasty."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I examine the pulsing sigils closely, their malevolent energy making my skin crawl. This corridor feels wrong on a fundamental level—something ancient and hungry sleeps here, something that shouldn't exist in our world anymore. Halie's right; these aren't just old runes. They're feeding whatever lies beneath this crumbling tower. We can't afford to trigger whatever trap Varrika almost fell into. The ground is unstable everywhere now—not just near the hidden doorway. I gesture for Merrin to stop examining the frame, voice tight with barely controlled unease. "The whole corridor's compromised. We need an alternative route."

I turn to Seraphine and Varrika, my wings half-spread in a protective stance without meaning to. "There must be another way up. The tower can't have only one entrance." My mind races through spell options—warding, counter-detection, perhaps even teleportation if we're desperate enough—but none of them feel quite right for this situation. The air grows heavier as I consider our options, the weight of ancient magic pressing down. We came here to retrieve a powerful artifact, yes, but at what cost? This feels like walking into a demon's lair—and I should know, having walked out of more than one myself.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's gaze snaps wide as Varrika plunges down the hidden stairs. "Blast it all!" she hisses, heart pounding. "Halie, any other ways up you can sense?" The halfling's nimble fingers trace the stonework, searching for traps or secret levers. "Because if this tower's got more surprises like that, I'm voting we find a new line of work."
