Merrin's eyes widen as she shifts her weight, scanning the darkness for any sign of movement. The faint glow from Jeane's Detect Magic spell casts eerie shadows on the walls, illuminating the malevolent intent etched into the floor. Seraphine's fingers twitch near her staff hilt, and Varrika grips her crossbow tightly, eyes fixed on the skeletal warrior shuffling forward. As the undead warrior closes in, its bony hands outstretched, a faint whispering grows louder, echoing off the stone walls. The air thickens with an unholy presence, making it harder for the party to breathe. The scuttling sounds behind them intensify, growing more urgent, as if whatever is lurking there is getting closer. The ward's magical defenses hum with energy, and the floor shudders beneath their feet. A crackling burst of electricity arcs across the hallway, illuminating a sigil etched into the stone for a split second before it's extinguished. The skeletal warrior lunges forward, its bony hands grasping for Varrika.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step between Varrika and the darkness ahead, voice firm but calm. “Wait. We need to map these wards properly before moving.” My hand tightens around my holy symbol, silver catching what little light remains. “Jeane, can you sense the boundaries? Merrin, keep that crossbow ready—we don’t know what’s already stirred.” The air tastes wrong here, thick with something foul and unnatural.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I taste it on my tongue—this corruption is thick here. The wards are like tripwires across the hallway, waiting for us to step wrong so they can summon more of those bonehead thugs. Varrika, stay sharp up front. Merrin, keep that crossbow pointed down—the last thing we need is a stray bolt activating something worse in this cursed darkness. The ward's magic feels… persistent. Like it breathes around us. We need to map it properly before moving forward—each step could trigger another undead party. I'll sense the boundaries while you all keep watch. That foul air, Halie… it tastes wrong because death magic saturates every stone here. My sorcery might be subtly altered just from being in this place. What's scuttling around back there? We need Merrin to check without triggering anything new. Move carefully—we're walking on glass in a room full of explosives right now.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I keep my crossbow pointed at the shadows, scanning for any sign of movement. My fingers are tight on the trigger, ready to fire at a moment's notice. I shift my weight from foot to foot, trying to stay light on my feet and ready to dodge if needed. The darkness presses in around us, thick as treacle and just as cloying. I can feel the weight of the heavy tome in my pack, and the malevolent presence that seems to emanate from it, like a malevolent spirit trapped within its pages. The air tastes wrong here, tainted by death magic and foul corruption. "Seraphine," I call out quietly. "You see anything out there, wizard?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I raise my staff, the crystal at its tip glowing with a soft, silver light that does little to cut through the oppressive darkness of the tower's entrance.
My eyes strain against the gloom, trying to make out the shapes of my companions in the dimness. The air is heavy with the scent of decay and something else - a thick, oily miasma of malevolent power that clings to the very stones themselves.
"The corruption here... it's not just in the wards. It's everywhere," I mutter, my voice so low it is almost lost to the sounds of our breathing and the distant skittering noises from within the tower.
I take a small step forward, peering down the dark hallway that stretches before us like a throat ready to swallow us whole. The floorboards creak under my weight, a sharp sound in the quiet. My fingers tighten around my staff as I feel the first tendrils of dread coil in my gut.
I turn to face Varrika, her massive frame silhouetted against the faint light filtering from outside. Her presence is a small comfort, but it does little to quell the fear rising within me.
"Varrika," I call out, my tone urgent yet hushed. "Can you hear that? Something... unnatural is moving back there."
My gaze flicks towards Merrin, her crossbow already raised and scanning the shadows. A grim smile touches my lips, a silent acknowledgment of her preparedness. Then I look to Halie, her holy symbol clutched in her hand, its faint glow offering a sliver of hope against the encroaching darkness.
"We need to be cautious," I say, my voice firm despite the tremor that runs through it. "This place... it feels alive. And it doesn't want us here."
I take another step forward, the tip of my staff tapping gently on the floorboards. The sound echoes down the hallway, a challenge thrown into the void. I am terrified, but anger, too, at Merrin's reckless haste that brought us to this point. My mind races, trying to remember every scrap of lore about this place, searching for some clue, some advantage we might have against whatever lies ahead.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The darkness presses in around us, thick as treacle and just as cloying. I can feel the weight of the heavy tome in my pack; it's like a physical pressure against my skin, making my hackles rise. But that's a worry for later. Right now, we've got undead to deal with. I take a step forward, positioning myself between our party and whatever horrors might come shambling out of the depths. The mace feels solid in my grip, reassuring. It's an old friend, well-worn from years of service on the battlefield. "Alright, listen up," I say, pitching my voice low but commanding. "We've got skeletal warriors to put back in the ground where they belong. Merrin, keep that crossbow ready. Halie, if you sense any more of these wards, let us know before we stumble into them. And Seraphine... well, you just do your wizard thing and try not to blow us up in the process, yeah?"

I glance around at the others, making sure they're with me. We're a motley crew, but we've faced worse than this. The real trick will be keeping our wits about us in these crumbling halls. One wrong step could be all it takes to bring the whole tower down on our heads. But that's a problem for later. Right now, we've got a job to do. And by Moradin's beard, I intend to see it through to the end.
