Phase: escalating

The sudden darkness was absolute, swallowing sound and sight in an instant. One moment the torches flickered defiantly against encroaching shadows, the next—nothing. Merrin's crossbow slipped from her fingers, clattering uselessly to the stone floor before she could catch it. She cursed under her breath, fumbling for her dagger instead while her eyes strained to pierce the inky blackness that had consumed the hallway whole.
Varrika was already moving, her boots scuffing against stone as she backed away from the threshold. "We're blind here," the dwarf growled, voice low and urgent. "Get back to the entrance hall—now." Her mace swung in slow arcs, searching for any resistance in the darkness that offered no visual clues.
Jeane's voice cut through the oppressive silence next, calm despite the obvious tension. "Stop. All of you." The sorcerer's eyes glowed faintly crimson, a spell activating to pierce the gloom—though it revealed little beyond shifting shadows and the pulsing red light of wards etched into the walls themselves. "Those wards are active," she continued, her tone analytical despite the circumstances. "Triggering them further might summon more...guests." Her wings rustled softly as she backed away from a particularly intricate sigil that seemed to absorb the dim red light rather than reflect it.
The scuttling sound came again, louder this time—a dry rustle of something moving across stone just out of sight. Merrin froze, every muscle tensed. "By the gods," she breathed, voice barely audible. "What is that?" The crossbow lay forgotten on the ground as her fingers tightened around the dagger hilt.
Varrika spat a curse, shifting her stance to cover both the entrance and the direction the sound had come from. "Doesn't matter what it is—we're getting out of here." Her free hand waved urgently at the others. "Move! Before whatever's making that noise gets close enough to see in this dark."
Jeane shook her head slowly, still studying the wards with intense focus. "Wait. The magic here...it's not just a trap. It's a machine—a mechanism for generating undead." She traced the symbols again with her eyes, following connections only she could perceive. "We can't just leave—if we break the wrong ward, we might fuel whatever's already feeding on this place."
The scuttling came again, closer this time, and something heavy dragged across stone with a wet scrape that made Merrin's stomach turn. The wards pulsed brighter for a moment before dimming again, their light revealing nothing but shadows playing tricks on the eyes.
The party stood frozen in that moment of utter darkness, caught between the instinct to flee and the knowledge that running blindly might lead them straight into whatever horrors already occupied this cursed tower's depths.
