Merrin's brow furrows as she examines the runes, her eyes tracing the intricate patterns with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation. She notices that the pulsing light seems to be responding to her gaze, its rhythm shifting from a slow, ominous hum to a faster, more erratic beat. The air around her grows colder, and the whispering in the distance takes on a faintly menacing tone. As she studies the runes, the gate's entrance begins to shudder, the ancient stone creaking ominously. The ground beneath her feet trembles, and the sound of scraping, scuttling claws echoes from the darkness within. Merrin's eyes snap up to meet Varrika's, a silent message passing between them: they need to move, now.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I narrow my eyes at the pulsing runes, the sickly green light making my stomach churn. These aren't just wards - they're a key, unlocking something dark and dangerous within. I can feel it in my bones. "Careful now," I mutter, not wanting to alert whatever's inside by fiddling with the magic too much. But we need to get through without tripping any alarms. I glance over at Jeane, her crossbow at the ready. "You see anything useful in those runes? We're going to need to pick this lock smart if we don't want to end up as skeletons ourselves."

My hands tremble slightly as I reach for my picks, but I push the fear down. We've come too far to turn back now. The Time-Splitting Sword is in there, and with it, our best chance at stopping whatever horror the sorcerers are summoning. I just hope we're not making a terrible mistake, walking right into the jaws of some ancient evil. But then again, when has that ever stopped us before? I let out a shaky laugh and get to work on the lock, my eyes darting between the runes and the keyhole, watching for any sign of trouble. We're about to find out what secrets this tower holds, for good or ill. And gods help us if we're too late to stop it.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I take a deep breath, trying to still the frantic beating of my heart as I watch Merrin work on the lock. The air in this place is thick with dark energy, cloying and oppressive. "Be careful," I whisper, my voice so low it's almost lost in the air. "These wards... they're not just keeping us out. They're letting something specific in." I turn to Jeane, my eyes wide with a mixture of fear and fascination. "What did you sense from those runes? Was there any hint of what this 'something' might be?"

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I shift my weight from foot to foot, mace gripped tight in my calloused hands as I eye the pulsing runes on the gate. The air feels thick here, charged with an unnatural energy that prickles at my skin. I've faced dark magic before, but never anything quite like this. "Careful now," I mutter to Merrin as she works on the lock. "Those wards are no joke. We breach this gate, we do it smart. No rushing in half-cocked."

My gaze flicks to Jeane, noting the sorcerer's arcane device and the focused intent on her face. I've learned to be wary of magic that feels wrong, but I trust the others to know their craft. "What are you up to?" I ask, curiosity tempered by caution. "Best not to go poking around with that dark magic. We've no idea what we might unleash."

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever horrors may lie beyond this door. The Time-Splitting Sword is our only hope, and I'll face whatever undead or sorcerers guard it. But I'll not do so blindly. "Whatever's in there," I say grimly, "we end it. For good this time."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I study the pulsing green runes carefully, my wings shifting restlessly behind me. The magic here feels... wrong. Not just a simple ward, but something designed to pull at the darkest parts of your essence. I can feel it trying to corrupt even as we stand here. This is more dangerous than I thought. There's no immediate threat yet—the wards haven't fully activated—but that doesn't mean they won't soon. We need to map these trigger points if we're going to navigate this place safely. Merrin, be careful with those locks. One wrong move and we could have every undead guardian in the tower converging on us. Seraphine's right; there's something ancient and hungry behind these symbols. I can sense it like a cold breath on the back of my neck. We need to proceed with extreme caution. Varrika has the right idea—we breach this gate, we do it smart. No rushing in half-cocked. Whatever's inside, it's not just going to hand over that sword willingly. I hold up my arcane device, a complex instrument of brass and crystal designed for divination and ward analysis. This should help us understand the patterns better. But be warned—the more we interact with these runes directly, the stronger their effect will become. We need to find another way in if possible. The air itself seems to thicken as I focus on the wards. There's a rhythm to them, like a heartbeat slowing towards death. Whatever this 'Devourer' is that Elric mentioned, it feels connected to these defenses somehow. Like the wards are feeding it energy, preparing for its arrival. We need to move quickly but carefully. The longer we linger here, the stronger their advantage becomes. Let's find the weak point in these wards—there has to be a way through that doesn't require direct interaction with the runes themselves.
