The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I circle the ancient gate slowly, my eyes scanning every inch of the rune-carved stone. The air here feels thick with residual magic—dark and old, like something that should have died long ago but refuses to let go. I can almost taste the desperation clinging to these walls. My wings twitch slightly as I focus my senses outward, extending my perception beyond our immediate circle. There’s… movement somewhere nearby. Not within the tower yet, thankfully, but definitely too close for comfort. Probably just wildlife in Whispering Woods—creatures drawn here by the residual dark energy—but we can't afford to take chances. I turn back to the group, my voice low and serious despite the playful curl of my lips. "Ladies—and Varrika—I suggest we don’t linger too long near this cursed entrance. The longer we stand exposed out here, the greater our chance of drawing unwanted attention." My eyes flick meaningfully toward the woods before returning to each person in turn. "We need to breach this gate and get inside where we can control the terrain, not sit ducks for whatever might be lurking outside."

I pause, running my fingers along one particularly intricate rune that seems to pulse faintly beneath my touch. "The runes themselves are fascinating—they’re not just seals but active wards designed to repel living beings while allowing certain… entities to pass through." My smile grows sharp as I glance at Halie’s crossbow and Merrin’s sword. "I can dispel them, but it won’t be subtle. Once we start, we’ll have moments—perhaps seconds—to get inside before whatever guards this place realize the barrier has fallen."

I straighten up, my wings extending slightly in an unconscious gesture of authority. "Who here is best suited to lead our entry? We need someone fast and silent—Merrin perhaps? Or would you prefer I take point with my magic shielding us?" My eyes linger on Seraphine for a moment too long before moving away. "Or if anyone else feels particularly brave…"

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step closer to the gate, my cross held forward as a symbol of protection. The runes pulse with dark energy—this is no mere barrier. "We cannot linger here unprotected. Those symbols are active and they're calling something." I turn to Merrin. "Your knowledge might be crucial in deciphering what we're up against."

The weight of our quest settles on me anew. Each step toward this place is a choice, and the consequences will not be gentle. But neither is the path of the righteous always easy.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin shifts her weight from foot to foot, eyeing the rune-covered gate with a blend of curiosity and apprehension. The ancient symbols seem to pulse with an ominous energy that sets her teeth on edge. She steps closer, peering at the intricate patterns etched into the stone. "Well now, ain't this a pretty pickle we've got ourselves into," she mutters under her breath, more to herself than anyone else. Her nimble fingers trace the outlines of a particularly complex rune, and she feels a faint tingling sensation at her touch. "Hrmm, I reckon these wards are designed to keep out the living while letting certain... entities pass through," she says, straightening up and addressing the rest of the party. "Probably some kind of dark magic at work here."

She glances over at Halie, a wry smile tugging at her lips. "As for who's best suited to lead our entry, I'd say we're all in this together, eh? No sense in sending one of us to their doom alone."

Merrin's eyes dart to the tower entrance, then back to the party. Her expression remains light, but there's a undercurrent of worry in her voice. "But you're right about one thing, Jeane - we can't just stand here gawking at this thing all day. Those runes might have an appetite for more than just our eyes."

She takes a step back, her hand drifting to the hilt of her dagger. "Alright then, who's ready to see what fresh hell awaits us on the other side? Remember, if things start getting too hot in there, we make like a flock of pigeons and fly the coop, capiche?"

Merrin's gaze lingers on the gate for a moment longer before she turns back to the party. "Lead the way, Jeane. Let's see what secrets this tower holds."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand before the ancient gate, my keen elven eyes tracing the intricate runes etched into its surface. Each symbol pulses with a malevolent energy, like a heartbeat of dark magic.
This is what we came for, but seeing it now... the reality of our quest feels heavier than the heavy mace at my hip. My fingers brush against the cool silver of my holy symbol, a small comfort in the oppressive atmosphere of the Whispering Woods.
"These runes are old," I murmur, more to myself than to the others. I turn to Halie, the cleric, who looks equally troubled by what she senses. "And powerful. They seem designed to repel living beings while allowing certain... entities to pass through."
My gaze sweeps over the towering structure looming above us, its stones stained with age and something fouler. A shiver runs down my spine, not entirely from the chill of the night air. Some deep instinct, honed by years of forbidden study, whispers that this place is a nexus of great power... and great danger.
I take a slow breath, steeling myself. Knowledge is always a double-edged sword, and never more so than when it comes to the arcane secrets of the world. But if we are to have any hope of claiming the Time-Splitting Sword, we must understand what we're facing first.
I gesture toward the gate, my voice dropping even lower as I address the group. "We should not linger here by the entrance. The runes themselves could be a form of protection for whatever lies within."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I step forward, my boots crunching on the mossy stones. The ancient runes on the gate seem to pulse with an ominous energy. I eye them warily. "Those wards are no joke," I grunt, adjusting my grip on the heavy mace at my hip. "They're designed to keep out the living, but let in certain... entities." I don't need to say what kind of entities - we've all heard the tales of this place. I turn to Jeane, nodding slowly. "You're right, sorcerer. Best not to linger here. But breaching that gate won't be easy. Those runes pack a punch."

I look around at the others, my brow furrowed in concentration. "Alright, listen up. Halie, Merrin - I need you two on this. Halie, your faith could be our shield against whatever dark magic is woven into these wards. And Merrin, your rogue's eye might spot a weak point we can exploit."

I straighten up, my armor creaking. "The rest of us will form a perimeter. Keep watch for any... unwelcome visitors." I don't need to elaborate on what those visitors might be. We all know the dangers that lurk in these woods. I take a deep breath, the chill air filling my lungs. The weight of our quest settles on me anew. Each step toward this place is a choice, and the consequences will not be gentle. But we came here for a reason. And I'll be damned if I let anything stop us from seeing this through. I nod to Jeane, my expression grim but determined. "Alright, sorcerer. Lead the way. Let's see what secrets this tower holds."
