Amidst the Whispering Woods' eerie silence, the ancient stone tower loomed, its entrance guarded by a rune-covered gate that seemed to absorb the faint moonlight filtering through the canopy above. The air was heavy with anticipation, the group's collective unease palpable as they stood before the threshold.

Varrika's fingers brushed the rune, and a low, resonant hum rippled through the stone, followed by a sudden flash of violet light that lanced across the gate's surface. The vibration shivered up her arm, leaving a faint sting where her mace had rested.

Jeane stepped forward, her wings rustling as she unfurled them slightly to better study the gate's surface. She traced the runes with a delicate finger, reading their ancient script like a scholar deciphering forbidden text. The violet glow pulses in rhythm with her touch, each rune responding differently—some humming deeper notes, others hissing faintly. This is dark magic of considerable age and power, bound not to stone alone but to something within the tower itself. She can almost taste the weight of centuries past, the secrets hidden behind these enigmatic symbols.

Halie stepped forward, positioning herself between Varrika and the gate, her eyes locked on Jeane's face. "Easy there, dwarf," she said, her voice firm but reasonable, a mother scolding an overzealous child. "Let's not be hasty. We need to properly identify what these runes do before we start." She turned to Seraphine, seeking her expertise. "Can you tell if the magic here is defensive or hostile?"

Merrin sidled up to the gate, her eyes darting between the glowing runes and the stonework. "Hmmm... looks like these runes are connected somehow," she said, tracing the intricate patterns with a finger. "Maybe try pressing them in a certain order?" She glanced at Halie, seeking approval before attempting anything further.

Seraphine moved in close to study the gate's runes with intense focus, her eyes narrowing as she traced their intricate patterns with a fingertip. The violet light pulses against her skin, raising goosebumps on her arms, but she didn't flinch away. She could feel the ancient magic thrumming through the stone, a low vibration that seemed to resonate in her own chest. It's powerful, potentially deadly if mishandled.

Varrika gently pressed her fingers against one of the glowing runes, feeling its texture and the subtle vibrations it emitted. She traced its intricate pattern, noting how it connected to the others in a complex network. The dwarf's brow furrowed in concentration as she tried to decipher the purpose behind each symbol.
