Phase: converging

The stone chamber felt smaller with each pulse of the central rune, its sickly green light casting grotesque shadows that writhed across ancient walls. Varrika descended the narrow stairs into darkness, her scarred hands gripping her mace with white-knuckled tension. Each step downward seemed to pull at something unseen within her—an ancient memory or a forgotten fear awakened by the tower's malevolent energy.
Halie knelt beside Merrin, her silver holy symbol held tight in both hands as if it could ward off the creeping corruption that twisted the elf's features. The air around them both shimmered with an unnatural energy, and every instinct screamed at her to run. "Varrika," she said, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her insides, "We can't go down there. Not yet. Merrin needs more time—needs help I can't give here." She looked up at their leader, seeing the fierce determination warring with exhaustion in those dark eyes. "We've come too far to throw away our lives on a suicide mission."
Jeane stood at the top of the stairs, her wings half-spread in instinctive resistance to the thick oppressive magic that made her skin crawl and feathers ache. The succubus's pale skin crawled with each pulse of the rune beneath them—an invitation to certain death for any fool brave enough to accept it. "Stop!" Her voice cut through the heavy silence like a blade, more desperate than she intended. "Merrin is dying down there. We can't let her—" The words caught in her throat as another wave of corruption pulsed upward from the depths.
Varrika paused on the stairs, looking back at Jeane and Halie with an expression that said more than words ever could about the burden of leadership. She knew the risks—they all did—but Merrin's curse had to be broken before it consumed them all. "Stay sharp," she growled, her voice barely audible over the creaking of ancient stone and the insidious whisper of magic in the air. "We go down together or not at all."
