Varrika tested each stone step before committing her full weight, every dwarf instinct screaming at her to turn back. The air here felt wrong—caked with something ancient and hungry—and Merrin's condition was deteriorating faster than she could explain. Her Protection spell shimmered like heat haze, barely containing the dark energy that seemed to seep through every crack in the magic. "Whatever waits at the bottom of those stairs means to claim us," Jeane said behind her, voice tight with barely controlled panic.
The stone stairs groaned under their combined weight as the party descended deeper into the cursed tower. The air grew heavy, thick with an ancient magic that made Jeane's wings twitch involuntarily and her skin crawl. Each beat of those dark leathery appendages felt wrong—like swimming against a current that wanted to drag her down. She forced herself to take another step forward, muscles tensing as she fought the instinct to flee. "Stay back," Jeane hissed over her shoulder, crimson eyes fixed on the pulsing light beneath her feet. "I don't think this is meant to be crossed." The ground shook again, a low rumble that vibrated through the stone floor and into her bones. Dust sifted down from cracks in the ceiling, and she heard Halie's sharp intake of breath behind her.
The darkness seemed to press in around them as they continued down the narrow winding staircase. Each step brought new dangers into focus—the sound of scuttling, unseen creatures echoing through the pit; the acrid scent of noxious gas burning their eyes and making them cough; the oppressive weight of malevolent energy that made the stones themselves seem to quiver with anticipation. Varrika's grip on her mace tightened instinctively, every sense straining as she scanned their surroundings for any signs of immediate threat.
The tower groaned around them again, a sound like a beast settling into sleep—or perhaps waking from it. The very air seemed to vibrate with dark power, and the central rune's pulse quickened in response. Jeane felt her stomach twist with apprehension as she realized that whatever lay ahead was likely only the beginning of their troubles.
