The stone stairs groaned under their combined weight as the party descended deeper into the cursed tower. The air grew heavy, thick with an ancient magic that made Jeane's wings twitch involuntarily and her skin crawl. Each beat of those dark leathery appendages felt wrong—like swimming against a current that wanted to drag her down. She forced herself to take another step forward, muscles tensing as she fought the instinct to flee.
"Stay back," Jeane hissed over her shoulder, crimson eyes fixed on the pulsing light beneath her feet. "I don't think this is meant to be crossed." The ground shook again, a low rumble that vibrated through the stone floor and into her bones. Dust sifted down from cracks in the ceiling, and she heard Halie's sharp intake of breath behind her.
Halie descended slowly, one foot testing each stone before shifting weight fully. The air here felt wrong—caked with something ancient and hungry—and Merrin's condition was deteriorating faster than she could explain. Her Protection spell shimmered like heat haze, barely containing the dark energy that seemed to seep from the very walls.
Varrika moved forward with grim determination, her scarred hands gripping the heavy mace. "Stay sharp," she growled, eyes scanning the shadows ahead. "If this staircase leads to a trap, I'd rather see it coming than stumble blindly into whatever waits at the bottom." The central rune pulsed again—brighter now—and she felt it like a physical pressure, pushing against her chest.
Jeane's crossbow tracked the shifting shadows, finger resting lightly on the trigger. Something ancient and hungry stirred in the depths below them, and Merrin was already too far gone to reason with. The curse was spreading faster than they'd anticipated—her body contorting in ways no living thing should move. Dropping the sword here? In this place where magic festered like an open wound? That felt like throwing themselves to the wolves.
The ground trembled again, and a faint, acrid smell of sulfur wafted up from the pit that yawned open in the center of the corridor ahead. A section of the wall began to shift, stone grinding against stone as some ancient mechanism activated. Varrika braced herself, muscles coiled tight for whatever threat might emerge.
"Form up!" she barked, voice echoing off the stone walls. "Halie, stay behind me and Jeane—use that shield if necessary. Merrin, keep your ass planted right where it is unless you want to end up like those skeletons we left upstairs."
Jeane's wings beat once, reflexively, as she tracked the shifting wall with her crossbow sights. The rune pulsed again—brighter still—and she felt it like teeth on her skin. Something ancient and hungry stirred in the depths below them, and Merrin was already too far gone to reason with.
"Whatever happens," Jeane muttered, "don't let go of that rope." She wasn't sure if she meant for Merrin or herself. The air grew thicker, heavier, as if the tower itself were drawing breath before unleashing whatever fresh horror lay waiting in the shadows ahead.
