The chamber's air was thick and wrong, resisting their passage like water resists a swimmer. Merrin descended into the narrow tunnel at the bottom of the pit trap, her torches flickering with each gust of stale air that rushed past. The water lapping against the stone walls seemed unnaturally cold, and an eerie green glow emanated from the central rune carved into the far wall, pulsing with a rhythm that felt less like stone and more like a heartbeat.

Suddenly, a faint hissing noise echoed through the tunnel, and the floor beneath Merrin gave a slight, ominous shudder. A new detail emerged: faint, glowing symbols traced along the walls in an intricate pattern, responding to the central rune's pulses with their own subtle light. The air grew heavier, pressing against them like a physical weight.

Varrika watched Merrin disappear into the tunnel, her gut twisting with unease. Magic always came at a price, and she didn't trust this sickly green glow or the way the air itself seemed to press against them. But their path forward was clear, as much as it galled her. "Merrin!" Her voice echoed in the tight space. "Don't go too far. We need to stick together if we're going to get through this cursed place in one piece."

Jeane watched Merrin disappear into that cursed tunnel, her torchlight diminishing like a dying star. The air grew heavier with each passing moment, thick with ancient death magic and the sickly sweet scent of decay. The central rune pulsed faster now—its rhythm matching her racing heartbeat. She stepped closer to the pit's edge, her clawed fingers tracing arcane symbols in the air as she concentrated on detecting magical traps or hidden dangers.

Merrin eyed the glowing runes warily, her hand tightening on the mace. The air felt thick and heavy, like it was clinging to her skin. She glanced back at Seraphine, nodding curtly. "Alright, alright, hold your horses," she muttered. "But I'm not waiting all day. This rope ain't gonna hold itself." She took a deep breath, trying to ignore the way her heart pounded in her chest. The central rune pulsed again, its light seeming to intensify slightly.

The floor shuddered again, more violently this time. Dust rained down from the ceiling, and a section of the wall near the runes cracked with an ominous sound. Merrin instinctively stepped back, her eyes widening. "Shit," she hissed under her breath. "That wasn't good." The air seemed to grow even thicker, the pressure increasing as if the chamber itself was taking a breath before exhaling something worse.

Jeane felt it first—a sudden surge of malevolent energy that made her skin crawl and her wings instinctively half-extend in alarm. She whirled around, her eyes scanning the chamber. "Everyone back!" she shouted, her voice echoing with uncharacteristic urgency. "The magic here is unstable—something's activating!" The central rune pulsed again, brighter this time, and a low rumble emanated from deep within the stone.

Varrika felt the sudden surge of power too, a cold dread settling in her stomach. She grabbed the rope connected to Merrin and pulled hard, hauling the halfling back toward the relative safety of the upper chamber with all her considerable strength. "Move your arse!" she barked, muscles straining. The stone floor beneath them shifted again, more violently this time, as if the tower itself was awakening.

Merrin stumbled backward, caught off guard by Varrika's sudden yank on the rope. She barely managed to keep her footing, the mace clattering from her grasp as she windmilled her arms for balance. "What the—" Her protest died in her throat as another rumble shook the chamber, louder this time. The central rune pulsed again, its light now a brilliant, angry green that cast stark shadows across the walls.

Jeane didn't wait to see what was happening below—the surge of power was too strong, too dangerous. She leapt back toward the entrance tunnel, her wings unfurling fully and catching the air just enough to give her momentum. "Everyone out!" she screamed, her voice barely human in its urgency. "Now!"

The central rune exploded with green light, casting stark shadows across the walls as the chamber shook violently. A wave of thick, dark energy pulsed outward from the pit, visible as a rolling mist that carried the stench of decay and ancient death. The stone floor beneath them heaved again, cracks spreading outwards from the pit like a spiderweb.

Varrika hauled Merrin clear of the pit just as the first section of floor collapsed inward with a deafening roar. She didn't hesitate—grabbing her own gear and sprinting for the exit tunnel, every dwarf muscle propelling her forward. The air behind them grew colder, the oppressive energy intensifying as more of the chamber's structural integrity failed.

Jeane reached the entrance tunnel first, her wings beating frantically to maintain speed. She skidded to a halt just inside, turning to see Merrin and Varrika emerge moments later, both gasping for breath. The rumbling behind them grew louder, punctuated by the sound of collapsing stone and the screech of something ancient and angry.

Merrin stumbled into the tunnel, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. She turned to see the entrance to the chamber collapse completely, a cloud of dust and debris billowing outwards. "Well," she panted, wiping sweat from her brow, "that could've gone better."
