Phase: converging

The air inside the chamber was thick and wrong, resisting their passage like water resists a swimmer. Merrin descended into the narrow tunnel at the bottom of the pit trap, her torches flickering with each gust of stale air that rushed past. The water lapping against the stone walls seemed unnaturally cold, and an eerie green glow emanated from the central rune carved into the far wall, pulsing with a rhythm that felt less like stone and more like a heartbeat.
Seraphine called out from above, her voice tight with apprehension. "Wait." The elf woman's sharp eyes were fixed on the darkness below, her fingers clutching a spell component she hadn't consciously raised. "The magic here... it feels wrong. Corrupted. Like nothing I've encountered before."
Jeane moved to the pit's edge, her wings half-extended for balance as if prepared to take flight or defend against an attack from below. The air in this chamber was thick with something ancient and hungry, resisting their presence like a physical force. She could feel it pulsing in time with the rune's light—hungry, patient, waiting.
Merrin paused at the tunnel's entrance, water rushing past her boots with an unsettling sound. The pulsing rune cast eerie shadows on the rough-hewn walls, making the space feel alive in a way that had nothing to do with simple geology. She called up to Halie, "Any word from your goddess about that gas? I can barely see two feet ahead." Her eyes strained against the darkness, searching for traps or obstacles hidden in the shadows. Every nerve was on edge, waiting for the tower to collapse around them or something worse to emerge from the depths.
The central rune pulsed again, brighter this time, and a low hum filled the chamber—a sound like stone grinding against stone, or something ancient and hungry whispering just beyond hearing. The air itself seemed to thicken further, resisting their presence with every breath.
