Merrin descended into the pit with caution, her halfling agility allowing her to navigate the descent with practiced ease. The air around her shifted the moment her feet touched the stone floor—it grew heavy and thick, resisting her breath like water inhaled too quickly. A shimmering oily film coated everything within sight, catching what little light filtered down from above in grotesque reflections. The central rune pulsed again, its sickly green light intensifying with each beat, painting the chamber walls in shades of decay that seemed to seep into the very stone.

Halie watched from above, her cleric's senses screaming warnings she couldn't fully articulate. The air tasted wrong—like copper and decay—and something ancient stirred beneath the tower's surface. She clutched her silver holy symbol tighter, feeling its warmth against her palm though the metal remained cold to the touch. "Merrin," she called down softly, voice barely disturbing the oppressive stillness, "I can feel something... ancient here. Hungry." Her eyes fixed on the pulsing rune at the chamber's center. Its sickly light made the shadows writhe and twist in ways that had nothing to do with natural movement.

Jeane felt it too—the sudden surge of ancient power as the central rune pulsed brighter, as though awakening from slumber. The air grew thick and resisting, pushing back against her every breath like a physical weight. Something ancient stirred here, something that didn't want them disturbing its rest. That gas Merrin had sensed... it carried more than poison, she'd wager. Magic clung to it like perfume to silk, dark and hungry and old beyond counting.

The very stones of this place seemed to creak under their own weight, groaning with the passage of centuries untold. The darkness pressed in from all sides, alive with malice that seeped into the marrow of her bones. This wasn't just a trap—this was a tomb, and something within it had awakened at their intrusion.

Merrin peered over the edge of the pit, her eyes straining in the gloom. She could make out the shimmering oily film on the air and the pulsing of the central rune, like a diseased heart trying to beat itself back to life. "Halie," Merrin called up, "any word from your goddess about that gas? It's getting thicker down here." Her grip on the rope tightened as she felt the weight of the tower's collapse pressing down from above—stone groaning under its own decay, ready to fall at any moment.

The sound of rushing water echoed from within the newly revealed tunnel, and Merrin's heart sank. A water source in an ancient collapsed tower could only mean one thing: a hidden cavern system below, likely flooded and unstable. But the alternative—leaving without the Time-Splitting Sword—was unthinkable. They'd come too far, sacrificed too much already.

She turned her attention back to the tunnel mouth, peering deeper into the darkness. The air within shimmered with that same oily film, and something moved in the shadows beyond—a flicker of motion too quick to be certain. Merrin's hand instinctively went to her dagger hilt, fingers curling around the familiar grip. Whatever lay ahead, she'd face it prepared.

The central rune pulsed once more, its light casting grotesque shadows that seemed to writhe with anticipation. The air grew heavier still, pressing down on them like a physical weight. Something ancient stirred in the depths of this tower—something hungry—and it had taken notice of their presence.
