Shadow of the Ancients / Run 012 / Main Story
Round 18 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin wedges her crowbar into the floor, a faint rumbling noise emanates from the pit, growing louder with each passing moment. The air around her seems to vibrate with the sound, causing the torches to flicker wildly. A nearby stone slab begins to slide, as if responding to the ground's distress, and it comes to rest mere inches from Merrin's head. The chamber falls silent, save for the ominous rumbling and the soft creaking of the ancient structure. The mirror's surface, once rippling, now seems calm, but the withered garden reflected within appears even more macabre, its twisted limbs grasping towards the group like skeletal fingers.
Jeane traces the central rune one more time, feeling its power pulse beneath her fingers—as if it breathes—and tries to think through what just happened. The ground shifting so dramatically when Merrin stumbled into that pit…it can't be coincidence. Something's still alive in here, watching us, and now it knows we've entered. She looks up at the others gathered around the edge of the hole. "The central rune pulsed brighter with our entry," she notes coolly. "That thing might have triggered some kind of alarm or defense mechanism."
Her wings twitch slightly as she considers their next move. The thickening darkness inside the tower feels wrong, heavy with ancient death magic that makes even her skin crawl a bit—though she'd never admit to feeling uncomfortable about anything in front of the others. Especially not Halie and her skittish nature. "The darkness is getting thicker," Jeane continues, trying to keep her voice steady despite the apprehension coiling cold in her stomach. "I think whatever magic animated those skeletons earlier might still be active further inside."
She steps back from the edge of the pit, running through their options in her mind while keeping an eye on Merrin's progress below. They need that sword, but touching it could trigger its curse—and given how carefully it was sealed away, she doubts whoever created it had pleasant intentions for anyone who dared to wield it. "Does anyone know," Jeane asks, directing the question at Seraphine and Halie specifically, "how to retrieve something without actually touching it? Maybe some kind of magical tool or workaround?"
I crouch at the edge of the pit, heart pounding. Merrin? My voice echoes off the stone walls. I can barely make out her response through the dust and darkness—something about a crossbeam and solid footing below. I need to get down there, but this hole feels... wrong. The air around it seems to thicken, like the space itself is breathing. I touch the edge with my mace tip; the stone vibrates faintly against the metal. Magical currents indeed. Varrika's right—we should plan first. What's the plan? I ask softly, more to myself than anyone else. The dust settles, revealing a swirling pattern on the far wall that wasn't visible before. It looks almost... alive. The central rune Jeane mentioned must be feeding this place energy. I'll need light for Merrin and protection if anything comes up from below. I pull out my silver holy symbol and begin a silent prayer, channeling what divine favor I can feel in this corrupt place. The symbol begins to glow faintly—a small, steady light that won't illuminate the entire chamber but should help Merrin see her way. Hold on, I call down. I'm coming.
I crouch at the edge of the pit, my keen elven eyes straining to pierce the gloom below. The air here is thick with an ancient, malevolent energy that prickles against my skin like a thousand invisible spiders spinning their webs. It's a feeling I know all too well from my studies of forbidden histories.
My gaze flicks to the swirling pattern on the far wall, now visible in the dim light filtering down from above. It reminds me of the sigils in some of my most dangerous grimoires—the ones that promise power at a terrible cost.
"I can feel it," I whisper, more to myself than anyone else. "This place... it's not just a ruin. It's a prison wearing a crown of magic."
I rise slowly, brushing dust from my robes. My fingers trace the intricate runes etched into the stone around the pit's entrance. They hum with a dark power, repelling any attempt to simply walk through them. No, this gate requires more than brute force or simple magical might.
"My friends," I say, turning to face the others with a look of grim determination on my face,* "we will need to be far cleverer than I first thought if we are to retrieve what we came for. This tower is not just sleeping—it's waiting. And I fear what it may wake up to."
I peer down into the pit, my brow furrowed with concern. The air feels thick down there, charged with an ancient magic that prickles against my skin. I can hear Merrin's grunts of effort as she works to free herself, but my eyes are drawn to the swirling patterns on the far wall. Those sigils... they remind me of stories whispered around campfires, tales of forbidden lore and terrible consequences. I've seen enough of the world to know that not all magic is meant for mortal hands. "Careful down there," I call out, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "We don't know what we're dealing with."
I turn to face the others, my expression grim. "Listen up. Whatever that sword is, it's not going to come easy. We need to be smart about this. Stick together, watch each other's backs, and for the love of the gods, don't touch anything without thinking twice."
My hand rests on the hilt of my mace, a comforting weight at my side. I may not understand magic, but I know the value of a good weapon and the strength of a solid plan. "Halie, keep that holy symbol of yours ready. Seraphine, see if you can make sense of those runes. Jeane, if anyone can figure out how to get that sword without touching it, it's probably you."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. "Merrin, when you're free, we're going down there together. No one gets left behind in this cursed place."
My eyes scan the chamber once more, searching for any sign of movement or danger. The air is thick with tension, and I can feel the weight of centuries bearing down on us. But I've faced worse than an old tower and some ancient magic. We came here for a reason, and by the gods, we're going to see this through. "Let's move," I growl, my voice a low rumble. "But stay sharp. There's no telling what we might find down there."
With that, I step forward, my boots echoing on the stone floor as I make my way towards the pit. The others fall into step behind me, and together, we descend into the depths of the accursed tower, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
