The gate's central rune pulsed again as Jeane stepped through into the darkness beyond, her wings half-spread in a subconscious gesture of defiance against the oppressive atmosphere that clung to them like cobwebs. The air inside was thick with the scent of decay and something else—old magic, dark and hungry.

Halie followed close behind, her torch held high to pierce the gloom. The flickering light revealed stone walls covered in strange symbols that seemed to writhe in the shifting illumination. She felt it too, the wrongness of this place, the ancient magic that saturated every stone and filled the air with a palpable sense of danger.

Seraphine moved forward next, her keen eyes scanning the runes on the gate itself. They were complex, unlike anything she had ever seen before—arcane symbols intertwined with what looked like warnings or curses. As her fingers traced over one particularly intricate design, it seemed to pulse beneath her touch, sending a jolt of cold energy up her arm.

Merrin brought up the rear, her dark eyes darting around the chamber for any sign of movement or threat. She kept her hand on the hilt of her heavy mace, ready to draw it at a moment's notice. The air was thick with an undercurrent of malevolent energy that made the wiry halfling's hackles rise.

They stood there for a long moment, taking in the scene before them—the pulsing sword, the writhing runes, the oppressive atmosphere. The chamber seemed to hold its breath, waiting to see what they would do next.

Varrika pushed past Merrin, her scarred face set in a grim expression. "By the ancestors' beard," she muttered, eyeing the pulsating rune on the gate with suspicion. "What have we gotten into?" Her gaze locked onto Halie. "Cleric, what do you make of that whisper? Sounds like this tower doesn't want us leaving with the prize." She jerked her head towards the sword at the far end of the chamber.

The grotto opened up into a larger chamber beyond the gate. Torches mounted on the walls flickered to life as they entered, their flames dancing with an unnatural intensity. At the far end stood a pedestal, and upon it rested a sword—the Time-Splitting Sword of legend. Its blade pulsed with an inner light, and even from this distance, they could feel its power radiating outwards.

The low moan that had greeted them at the entrance grew louder now, filling the chamber with a sound like wind through crypts or the weeping of the damned. It seemed to emanate from the very stones themselves, a constant reminder of the dark magic that saturated this place.

Merrin felt a chill settle into her bones that had nothing to do with the damp stone—this was old magic, dark and hungry. Jeane unfolded her wings fully now, not for flight but as a deliberate display of power, a way to push back against the oppressive energy pressing in on them all. The air inside this place was wrong, thick with the scent of decay and something else, something ancient and malevolent.
