Phase: converging

Merrin worked the picks with practiced ease, the ancient mechanism groaning in protest as it began to yield. The central rune pulsed again, its red glow intensifying, and a wave of cold energy washed over her. "Fuck," she hissed through clenched teeth, stepping back quickly. "That thing just... it felt like it touched me." Her dark eyes darted around the tunnel entrance, searching for any movement in the shadows beyond. The mournful moan had grown louder, more insistent, and Merrin could feel her heart pounding in her chest.
Jeane unfolded her wings fully, the leathery membranes stretching wide in a display of power that seemed as much for her own benefit as a warning to whatever might be lurking in the darkness. The oppressive energy pressed against her skin like physical weight, but she pushed back, drawing on her innate resilience. "Of course it touched you," she snapped, her crimson eyes flashing. "It's not supposed to be a pleasant experience. Now, are we going in or standing around letting the ghosts know we're here?"
Halie moved forward with the torch held high, her blue-grey eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of movement. The ancient stone walls seemed to absorb what little light she could provide, leaving deep shadows that felt almost alive with malevolence. "The runes," she said, her voice tight, "did you see them pulse? The central sigil does feel... alive, in a way." She clutched her holy symbol, feeling its cool metal against her palm. "Stay together. We don't know what's down here."
The gate mechanism ground to a halt with a final, ominous click, and the ancient portal swung open on creaking hinges that seemed to scream in protest. Beyond lay a dark corridor leading deeper into the tower, the air within thick with the stench of decay and old magic. Merrin took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. "Alright," she muttered under her breath, more to herself than anyone else. "Let's see what we're dealing with here." She drew her dagger, its steel gleaming dully in the torchlight, and crept forward into the darkness.
Jeane followed close behind Merrin, her wings half-folded now but still visible, a constant reminder of her otherworldly nature. The oppressive energy grew stronger as they moved deeper into the tower, and she could feel it like a physical weight pressing down on her. "This place is crawling with dark magic," she whispered to Halie behind them. "Keep your holy symbol ready. We might need it." Her crimson eyes scanned the shadows ahead, searching for any sign of movement or threat.
Halie brought up the rear, torch held high as she tried to pierce the oppressive darkness. The air grew colder as they descended deeper into the tower, and she could feel a faint tingling on her skin—a sensation she recognized from encounters with residual magic. "I don't like this," she murmured, more to herself than to the others. "Something's not right here." She clutched her holy symbol tighter, drawing comfort from its familiar shape against her palm.
The corridor opened into a larger chamber, and Merrin froze mid-step, holding up a fist for silence. In the flickering torchlight, she could make out shapes moving in the shadows—skeletal figures clad in rusted armor, their empty eye sockets seeming to glow with an inner light as they turned towards the intruders. The mournful moan that had been echoing through the tower resolved into a chorus of dry clicks and rattling bones.
Jeane's wings snapped wide instinctively as she assessed the threat. "Fuck," she hissed, already drawing on her arcane power. "Skeletons. Lots of them." Her crimson eyes locked onto the nearest figure, and she raised her hand, arcane energy crackling between her fingertips. "Halie—light! We need to see what we're dealing with. Merrin, stay alive!"
Merrin's rogue instincts kicked in immediately. She dropped into a crouch, dagger held low as she scanned for the best tactical position. The skeletons were already advancing, their movements jerky and unnatural but relentless. "There!" she hissed, pointing to a narrow archway on the left side of the chamber. "We can funnel them there, control the engagement." She darted forward, positioning herself in the choke point with her back to the wall.
Halie thrust her torch forward, casting what light she could into the chamber. The skeletons' bones seemed to absorb the illumination rather than reflect it, leaving them appearing as shifting shadows until they moved directly into the torchlight. "By the goddess's light!" she intoned, raising her holy symbol high. A soft golden glow enveloped the party, making the skeletons hiss and recoil slightly. "Stay close," she urged, moving to position herself beside Merrin in the archway.
The first skeleton lunged from the shadows, its rusty sword raised high. Merrin intercepted with a quick strike of her own dagger, the metal ringing out against bone as she deflected the blow. The creature stumbled past her into the narrow passage, and she followed up with a series of quick stabs to its joints—knees, elbows, wrists. Bone shattered with each impact, but the skeleton showed no signs of stopping.
Jeane unleashed a blast of arcane energy at the nearest target, the bolt of crackling power striking it square in the chest. The creature stumbled back, its bones glowing faintly from within as the magic coursed through its unnatural body. But instead of collapsing, it merely shook its head and advanced again, more slowly this time.
Halie clutched her holy symbol tighter, feeling the familiar warmth of divine energy flowing through her. "Sanctify!" she cried out, pressing the symbol against Merrin's shoulder. A pulse of pure light enveloped the halfling rogue, and Merrin felt her movements suddenly seem easier, more precise. "Against the undead!" Halie shouted, drawing on her training to channel protective energy.
The second skeleton charged at Jeane, its rusty sword raised high. She sidestepped the clumsy attack with ease, countering with a vicious backhand strike that sent the creature's skull spinning across the chamber floor. But even as she destroyed one, two more emerged from the shadows behind it.
Merrin grunted with effort as she continued her relentless assault on the skeleton in the choke point. Her dagger found purchase again and again, shattering bone and tearing through rotted cloth. The creature's movements were becoming slower, less coordinated, but it still refused to fall. She risked a glance over her shoulder to see Halie standing ready with her holy symbol raised, providing what support she could.
"Fuck this," Jeane snarled, her crimson eyes flashing with arcane power as she assessed the situation. Three skeletons were converging on her position, and more moved in the shadows beyond. She knew they couldn't keep fighting like this—eventually, numbers would tell. With a swift gesture, she cast a spell that sent a wave of force rippling through the chamber floor. The stone beneath the skeletons' feet buckled and cracked, sending them stumbling and collapsing in a heap.
"Run!" Jeane shouted, already sprinting for the far side of the chamber. "We need to find higher ground or narrow passageways—this room is too big, too many of them!" She gestured frantically for Merrin and Halie to follow as she raced towards what looked like a crumbling staircase leading upward.
Merrin didn't need to be told twice. She delivered one final, brutal strike to the already-damaged skeleton in front of her—her dagger punched clean through its skull with a satisfying crack—and then spun away, sprinting after Jeane. The sound of bones clicking and clacking in pursuit echoed through the chamber.
Halie followed close behind Merrin, her torch held high as she navigated the treacherous floor. The golden glow from her holy symbol pulsed with each heavy footfall, casting dancing shadows that made the pursuing skeletons seem even more menacing. "Up there!" she gasped, pointing to the staircase Jeane had targeted. "We can bottleneck them again!"
The party pounded up the crumbling stairs, the sound of pursuit growing louder behind them. The stone under their feet felt unstable, shifting with each heavy footfall, but they pressed on driven by adrenaline and the need to escape the horde below. At the top, they found themselves in a narrow corridor that opened into what looked like a small chamber—perfect for defending against the undead horde.
Jeane skidded to a halt at the end of the corridor, her wings half-spread for balance as she caught her breath. The oppressive dark energy here felt even stronger than downstairs, but at least they had a defensible position now. "This will have to do," she panted, already scanning for tactical advantages. "Merrin—barricade that entrance if you can. Halie, keep that light going and be ready with your blessings or whatever cleric magic you've got."
Merrin was already moving, her rogue's eyes assessing the situation in an instant. She spotted a heavy-looking stone urn against one wall and dragged it over to block part of the corridor entrance. "This'll slow them down," she grunted, wedging it into place with practiced ease. "But we need something better—something to actually stop them if they come in numbers."
Halie moved to the center of the chamber, torch held high as she tried to cast its meager light across every shadowy corner. The air here felt even more wrong than downstairs—cold and thick with a malevolent presence that seemed to seep from the very stone itself. She clutched her holy symbol tighter, drawing strength from its familiar weight against her palm. "I can try a ward," she offered, voice tight with apprehension. "Something to... to keep them out, or at least slow their advance." Her blue-grey eyes met Jeane's across the chamber. "But this place... it's fighting back. The magic here is ancient and strong."
Jeane nodded grimly, her crimson eyes scanning the chamber for any sign of immediate threat. "Do it," she said. "Whatever you can manage. We need every advantage we can get." She moved to the opposite side of the corridor entrance, positioning herself where she could provide arcane support if the skeletons broke through Merrin's barricade.
Merrin finished securing the makeshift barrier and joined Halie in the center of the chamber. "Alright," she said, her voice low and determined. "Let's see what we're dealing with here." She drew her dagger again, holding it ready as she began a slow circuit of the room, eyes scanning every inch for hidden threats or escape routes.
Halie closed her eyes, focusing on her connection to divine power. The familiar warmth of sacred energy flowed through her, but she could feel resistance—this place actively opposed her attempts at protection. Still, she persisted, raising her holy symbol and beginning to chant in a low voice. "By the light of the goddess..." The air around her began to shimmer faintly, golden particles swirling into a visible barrier that slowly extended across the corridor entrance.
Below them, the sound of clicking bones and scraping metal grew louder as the skeleton horde ascended the stairs. Whatever ancient magic animated these undead guardians was clearly responding to the party's intrusion, sending more and more of its dark minions after them.
Jeane watched Halie work her magic with growing respect. The golden barrier shimmered into place across the corridor entrance, not solid but visible—a tangible sign that they were actively defending themselves against this accursed place. She turned her attention back to the barricade Merrin had set up, ready to provide support if needed.
Merrin completed her circuit of the chamber and returned to Halie's side, impressed by the visible ward she'd managed to establish. "Nice work," she murmured. "That'll slow them down at least." She pressed closer to the corridor entrance, dagger held ready as she listened intently for any sign of the approaching undead.
Halie finished her incantation with a final gesture, the golden particles condensing into a visible shimmering barrier across the corridor entrance. It wasn't solid—light still passed through it—but the magical energy was unmistakable. She stepped back, breathing heavily from the effort. "It won't hold forever," she warned, wiping sweat from her brow. "But it should slow them down. Give us a chance to prepare."
The sound of scraping metal and clicking bones grew louder, echoing through the corridor beyond their makeshift barrier. Merrin pressed closer, listening intently. "They're almost here," she reported grimly. "Sounds like more than just the ones from downstairs." She glanced back at Jeane and Halie. "We need a plan. We can't keep running forever."
Jeane nodded, her crimson eyes gleaming with arcane power as she considered their options. "Alright," she said, voice low and determined. "Here's what we do. Merrin—you stay on defense here, use that dagger to pick them off one by one through the barrier. Halie, you keep that ward maintained and be ready to heal anyone who gets hurt." Her wings unfurled slightly, a sign of her readiness. "I'm going to try something big. Something that might collapse this whole damn tower on us, but it'll also turn every skeleton downstairs into dust. Stay back."
Merrin's eyes widened at Jeane's proposal, but she nodded grimly. "Understood," she said, moving into position beside the barrier. "I'll thin their numbers as much as I can." Her dagger glinted in the torchlight as she prepared to strike through the shimmering ward.
Halie moved back to the center of the chamber, raising her holy symbol again. "I'll hold the ward," she promised, voice tight with concentration. "But Jeane—be careful. If this tower collapses, we all die."
Jeane met Halie's gaze and nodded once, her crimson eyes fierce with determination. "That's why you two need to stay back," she said, already beginning to gather arcane energy around her. The air crackled with power as she drew on her deepest reserves of magical strength. "Find cover. This is going to be big."
The sound of approaching undead grew louder still—clicking bones and scraping metal just beyond their makeshift barrier. Merrin crouched low, dagger held ready as she prepared to strike through the ward at the first target. Halie raised her holy symbol higher, golden light spilling from it as she channeled every bit of divine energy she could muster to maintain the barrier.
Jeane stood in the center of the chamber, wings spread wide as arcane energy crackled and danced around her in a visible aura. Her crimson eyes glowed with the intensity of her concentration as she wove the complex spell pattern required for such a massive display of power. The air around her began to shimmer and distort, reality itself bending to her will.
The first skeleton slammed into Halie's ward with a crack like thunder, its bones shattering on impact but reforming almost immediately. Merrin struck through the barrier with her dagger, the blade punching clean through the creature's skull in a spray of dust and splintered bone. But even as it collapsed, another took its place—an endless horde seemingly.
Jeane's voice rose in arcane chanting, the power building around her to a near-unbearable intensity. The very stone beneath their feet seemed to vibrate with the force of her spell. "Now!" she screamed, thrusting both hands forward and releasing the pent-up magical energy in a massive explosion of pure force.
The blast ripped through the chamber, tearing apart stone and bone alike. A shockwave of pure arcane power slammed into the horde of skeletons below, disintegrating them all in an instant—bones, rusted armor, and all reduced to swirling dust that was swept away by the magical wind. But Jeane's spell didn't stop there. The ancient stone of the tower itself began to groan and crack under the strain, massive chunks falling away as the very structure started to collapse.
"RUN!" Merrin shouted, grabbing Halie's arm and pulling her towards the far end of the chamber. They sprinted for their lives as the ceiling above began to rain dust and small stones, the entire floor tilting dangerously beneath their feet.
Jeane managed to maintain control of her spell just long enough to ensure the skeletons were completely destroyed before letting it dissipate. She barely had time to fold her wings tight against her body before she was diving after Merrin and Halie, the collapsing chamber sending a cloud of choking dust and debris exploding outwards.
The four women tumbled through a narrow passage on the far side of the chamber just as the ceiling came crashing down behind them in a roar of collapsing stone. They slid to a halt in a small antechamber, coughing and covered in dust, but alive—and the sound of falling masonry continued from deeper within the tower.
Merrin sat up first, her eyes streaming with dust as she tried to assess their situation. "Well," she gasped between coughs, "that was... effective." She looked around the small antechamber they'd found themselves in—a dead end, it seemed, but at least stable for now.
Halie pushed herself upright more slowly, one hand pressed against her ribs where she'd hit the stone floor hard. "Are you both alright?" she asked, voice hoarse from dust and exertion. She clutched her holy symbol tightly, drawing comfort from its familiar presence even as she tried to ignore the ache in her body.
Jeane emerged last from their tumbled heap, wings carefully folded to avoid damaging them on the stone walls. She coughed dust from her lungs before speaking, her voice rough but satisfied. "That," she declared with a grin that showed teeth, "was exactly what I intended." Her crimson eyes gleamed in the flickering torchlight as she surveyed their surroundings. "Now then—what new horrors does this dead end contain?"
Jeane
Merrin
Halie
