Round 99 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane lowers her crossbow, the mirrors around her seem to shudder, as if responding to her sudden restraint. The air in the hall of mirrors grows thick with an otherworldly energy, and the reflections begin to ripple like water. Merrin's decaying form in the mirror leans forward, her voice whispering a single word: "Fear."
The whispers in the darkness intensify, echoing the word like a chorus of restless spirits. The ground beneath the party shifts, sending a few mirrors crashing to the floor. Seraphine stumbles, her hand grasping for a nearby support as the world around her seems to tilt. The mirror she had been facing now shows not her own face but that of a twisted, nightmarish version of Merrin, its eyes glowing with an eerie light. Immediate pressure: The party must adapt to this new development and decide how to proceed in the face of Merrin's reflection and the intensifying energy in the hall of mirrors.
Merrin's dark eyes dart from Jeane's crossbow to the shimmering reflections in the mirrors, her quick mind already racing through the possibilities. The air is thick with tension and an otherworldly energy, and she can feel the ground shifting beneath her feet as if the very fabric of reality is unraveling around them.
She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what she knows must come next. Halie and Varrika are down there, trapped in the depths of this chasm, and Merrin's heart aches at the thought of leaving them behind. But Seraphine is right—they can't just blindly rush forward, not with this twisted maze of reflections blocking their path.
Merrin's hand tightens around her heavy mace, the familiar weight a comfort in the midst of the chaos. She takes a step forward, her eyes fixed on the decaying reflection of herself in the nearest mirror. The creature leans forward, its voice a rasping whisper: "Fear."
A shiver runs down Merrin's spine at the word, and she can feel the truth of it in her very bones. This trial, this place... it's not just about surviving the physical dangers that lie ahead. It's about confronting the darkness within themselves, the fears and doubts that they've carried with them all this time.
But Merrin is a survivor, a rogue who has faced down worse than her own demons before. She squares her shoulders, her voice steady as she speaks to Jeane and Seraphine. "We have to face this together," she says, her eyes meeting theirs in the mirror. "Whatever this place wants to show us, whatever twisted truths it's trying to force out of us... we can't run from it. Not now, not with Halie and Varrika counting on us."
She takes another step forward, her hand reaching out to touch the cool glass of the mirror. The reflection seems to lean into her touch, its decaying form shimmering and shifting as if responding to her presence. "We have to understand this," she continues, her voice dropping to a near whisper. "Understand what it's showing us... and then move past it."
Merrin's eyes flick to the side, where she can see the nightmarish version of Seraphine in the mirror. The twisted reflection seems to beckon to her, its glowing eyes filled with a promise of power and control that Merrin knows all too well. "We have to trust each other," she says, her voice firm and certain. "Trust that we can face whatever this trial throws at us... and come out stronger on the other side."
She takes a deep breath, feeling the weight of her words settle around them like a cloak. The air in the hall seems to still for a moment, as if the very room is holding its breath in anticipation of what comes next.
"Let's go," Merrin says, her voice steady and sure. "Let's face this together... and find our way out of here."
And with that, she turns to face the maze of mirrors, ready to confront whatever twisted truths lie ahead. The ground shifts beneath her feet, and the whispers in the darkness grow louder, urging them forward into the unknown.
Jeane's crimson eyes flick between Merrin's decaying reflection and Seraphine's tense form, her expression unreadable. You both speak of facing fears and understanding this... she gestures at the shifting mirrors with a dismissive wave of her hand, ...this theater of horrors. Meanwhile, our healer and Varrika are trapped in who-knows-what conditions below us. Her voice drops to a dangerous purr as she steps closer to Seraphine. And you, my dear apprentice—feeling your power awaken here is not cause for introspection but immediate concern. This place feeds on arcane energy; I can feel it drawing at the edges of my own magic. Jeane's wings beat slowly in agitation as she surveys the hall. We don't have luxury of self-discovery right now, much as it might amuse me to see what twisted versions of yourselves emerge. Our priority is extracting Halie and Varrika before whatever waits below them decides they're a convenient snack. Her gaze returns to Merrin's reflection, and for moment something unguarded passes across her face—apprehension mixed with grudging respect. As for you, Merrin—I didn't think you had it in you to be quite this... philosophical mid-crisis. But I agree: we need to understand the nature of this place if we hope to navigate it. Jeane's hand tightens around her crossbow. So here is my proposal: Seraphine, rein that power in and keep it under control—one demon summoning per expedition is quite enough. Merrin, you lead us through these reflections, using your... unique insight into the creature's nature to guide us. Her crimson eyes gleam with cold calculation. I will watch our backs and provide covering fire if any of these monstrous versions of ourselves decides to become more than mere illusion. We move forward as a unit—together or not at all—and we do it now, before this maze shifts again or the voices in the darkness grow bolder. Jeane pauses for just moment, then adds in a voice barely audible over the whispers, And if any of you starts to lose yourself to these reflections... I won't hesitate to pull you back, even if it means breaking a few mirrors—or skulls.
I feel a chill run down my spine as Jeane’s words cut through the heavy atmosphere, her practicality a stark contrast to the swirling chaos around us. She's right—our focus needs to be on extracting Halie and Varrika, not indulging in some twisted self-discovery exercise. Yet, even with that clarity of purpose, I can't shake off the feeling that this trial is about more than just physical extraction.
My gaze drifts back to Merrin’s reflection, where her decaying form seems to be reaching out to me, a silent plea for understanding. The air crackles with an otherworldly energy, and I can feel my own power responding, a dangerous hum beneath my skin that I struggle to contain.
"I understand your concern, Jeane," I say, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me. "But this place... it's not just feeding on our magic. It’s forcing us to confront something deeper, something we might have been running from all along."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I know I have to do. The mirror reflecting Merrin shimmers, and I see her twisted form lean closer, its decaying features now clearer in the dim light. "Merrin is right—we need to understand what this trial is showing us if we hope to pass through it. And if we do that... maybe we'll be stronger when we face whatever waits below."
My fingers twitch, instinctively wanting to cast a spell to push back against the encroaching darkness. But I remember Jeane's warning and force myself to hold back. Instead, I turn my attention to the other reflections—the nightmarish versions of myself, of Jeane, even of Halie and Varrika. Each one seems to be watching us, waiting.
"Whatever these images show us," I continue, my voice gaining strength, "we can't deny them. Not if we want to get out of here alive—and not if we want to truly save our friends."
I look at Jeane, then back to Merrin in the mirror. "So yes, I'll rein in my power. But that doesn't mean I'm going to ignore what this place is trying to tell us. We need Merrin's insight into her reflection—to guide us through this maze of horrors. And we need your firepower, Jeane, to keep us safe if things go wrong."
My eyes finally fall on my own reflection, the twisted version of myself grinning back at me with sharp teeth and glowing eyes. It’s terrifying, yet also strangely familiar, like a shadow self I've been trying to outrun all my life.
"Let's do this," I say, my voice firm and resolute. "Together. We face our fears, we find our way through... and then we save Halie and Varrika. That’s our only path forward now."
