Merrin stepped closer to Seraphine, her voice low. "We need to move fast. The ground's unstable here—feels like the whole place is about to come down." She glanced at Jeane, then back to the shifting mirrors. "And I don't think these reflections are just for show. They're... active. Responding somehow."

Jeane crossed her arms, wings folding tight against her back. "Active or not, they're a distraction we can't afford. We need to find Halie and Varrika before whatever's down there kills them—or worse." Her eyes narrowed as she watched the rippling surfaces. "Unless you two have some brilliant idea for dealing with sentient mirrors?"

Seraphine shook her head, her hands clenching and unclenching as if holding onto a spell that wouldn't form. "I... I don't know. The magic here is ancient, twisted. My barrier's barely holding against the ambient corruption." She met Merrin's eyes, seeking reassurance. "We need to find them quickly, but moving blindly through this maze could be disastrous."

Merrin moved between them, her quick mind already working on solutions. "Alright. Here's what we do: Jeane, you've got the best eyes for traps and hidden dangers—you take point. Seraphine, you maintain that barrier and watch our backs. I'll try to... interpret these reflections somehow." She gestured at her own corrupted image with a grimace. "Maybe if we're careful, they can guide us without driving us mad."

Jeane snorted, but nodded reluctantly. "Fine. Stay close, both of you. And Merrin—if your reflection starts singing show tunes or something, we're leaving you behind." She moved forward, her eyes scanning the floor and walls for any sign of a passage or hidden mechanism.

Seraphine managed a weak laugh at Jeane's dark humor, some of the tension easing from her shoulders. "Deal. But if yours starts reciting tax law, I'm out." She fell into step behind Jeane, her hands glowing faintly as she reinforced the protective barrier around them.

Merrin followed, her eyes fixed on the shifting reflections. As they moved deeper into the hall, the whispers grew louder, and the images in the mirrors began to change more rapidly. Her own reflection flickered between the decaying form and brief glimpses of a dark, featureless void behind her. She shivered involuntarily but pressed onward, determined to see this through.

The hall seemed to stretch endlessly ahead, each turn revealing more mirrors and more shifting images. Jeane moved with practiced precision, her eyes catching every subtle irregularity in the stonework. Seraphine trailed close behind, her barrier flickering occasionally as she strained to maintain it against the increasing corruption.

As they rounded yet another corner, Merrin suddenly stopped, her eyes fixed on a particularly large mirror that seemed to pulse with an inner light. "Wait," she said softly. "I think... I think this one's different." She approached cautiously, her reflection in the glass shifting and warping in ways that made her stomach churn.

Jeane turned back, her expression skeptical. "Different how? And more importantly, can we smash it without collapsing the entire tower?"
