The tension in cavern beneath the collapsed bridge: The Chasm of Reflections tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I feel my heart pounding in my chest as I listen to Jeane and Seraphine talk to the Guardian. The air around us feels thick with tension, like at any moment something terrible could happen. I can't stop thinking about Halie, Varrika, and Merrin down there in the darkness. Are they okay? What's happening to them? But as much as I want to rush down after them, I know we need answers first. This trial thing sounds dangerous, and if Seraphine really does have some kind of ancient power inside her now... well, that changes everything. I take a deep breath and step forward, my hand on the hilt of my dagger. "Okay, so let's get this straight," I say, my voice shaking only a little. "We're supposed to trust you, this ancient guardian who's been sitting down here in the dark for who knows how long? And we're supposed to believe that Seraphine suddenly has some kind of magic superpower just because you say so?"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane hovers closer to Merrin, her expression unreadable but her crimson eyes intense as she considers the rogue's words. Careful now, little one—questioning the motives of ancient powers is a quick way to earn yourself a very painful lesson. Her tone carries a warning, mixed with something like admiration for Merrin’s spirit.

But then Jeane’s gaze sharpens as she turns back to the Guardian. Though your point is well-taken, halfling. We’ve all had our fill of tricksters and deceivers in this accursed tower already. So let me be perfectly clear: If you expect us to simply trust your word on any of this—She gestures vaguely at Seraphine’s glowing hands—then you’re sorely mistaken. The sorceress’s wings beat slowly, maintaining her position just above the chasm edge. You want our cooperation? Then prove it. Tell us exactly what kind of power has awoken within my friend here—and more importantly, how we can control it before it tears this entire cavern apart. Because let me assure you, if Seraphine’s transformation leads to any harm coming to my companions or myself, then your trial will be the last thing on our minds. Jeane’s voice grows colder, sharper. And while we’re at it, Guardian—you mentioned a maze of mirrors that tests courage and wits. Care to elaborate? Because from where I’m hovering, that sounds suspiciously like the setup for an excruciatingly dull puzzle room or a nightmare fueled by my own insecurities.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch as Jeane and Merrin question the Guardian, their skepticism echoing my own internal turmoil. The air crackles with unspoken tension—the sorceress’s threat hangs heavy, a promise of violence should things go awry. It’s a sentiment I share, though my own fears are more deeply rooted in what this awakening power might do to me, to us all.
My hands still glow faintly, a constant reminder of the strange energy coursing through my veins. It feels like a living thing now, pulsing just beneath my skin in time with my racing heart. I try to focus on the Guardian’s words, to parse out the truth from whatever ancient riddles it may be speaking, but all I can think about is the danger we’re putting ourselves in.
Merrin is right—how can we trust this creature? How do we know this isn’t some elaborate trap designed to exploit our desperation? Yet, as I look at Merrin, I see the same fear reflected back at me. We all want the same thing—to get our friends back safely.
I take a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. My gaze falls on the glowing barrier Seraphine maintains around us, a shimmering wall of protective magic that seems to be the only thing holding the darkness at bay. "We should try to understand this power better before we attempt the trial," I say, my voice softer than I intend. "If it really is an ancient magic, then there must be some way to control it, to ensure it doesn't harm anyone."
The thought of using this newfound ability to save our companions is both terrifying and exhilarating. It feels like standing on the edge of a cliff, knowing you have to jump but being petrified of what lies below. But isn’t that what we came here for? To face the unknown, to push beyond our limits?
I look at Jeane, then back at the Guardian. "Tell us what kind of tests await us in this maze of mirrors," I ask, my voice gaining some of its earlier strength. "And how does Seraphine’s power factor into it? Because if we’re going to risk everything on a trial of courage and wits, I need to know exactly what we’re up against."
My hand tightens around the hilt of my mace, a silent promise to myself and to my friends. We will find a way through this—we have to. The fate of Halie, Varrika, and Merrin depends on it. And now, apparently, so does the fate of this strange power inside me.*
