The air crackled with unspoken tension—the sorceress’s threat hung heavy, a promise of violence should things go awry. It was a sentiment Seraphine shared, though her own fears were more deeply rooted in what this awakening power might do to her, to us all. Her hands still glowed faintly, a constant reminder of the strange energy coursing through her veins.
The elf woman stood at the edge of the chasm, her keen gaze fixed on the darkness below. She could feel the corruption seeping from the stones themselves, a malevolent presence that seemed to press against her skin like living shadow. But there was something else too—something ancient and powerful, something that called to the magic within her.
Merrin shifted uncomfortably beside her, her small frame tense as she strained to hear any sound from below. The halfling rogue had always been quick with a smile and quicker still with her daggers, but now there was a wariness in her eyes that spoke of genuine fear. Seraphine knew how much Merrin hated being out of control—knew how much it must be eating at her to stand here helpless while their friends were trapped below.
The ancient Guardian’s voice echoed up from the depths once more: “The trial begins now.” Jeane hovered closer, her crimson eyes intense as she considered the rogue’s words. Careful now, little one—questioning the motives of ancient powers is a quick way to earn yourself a very painful lesson. But then her gaze sharpened as she turned back to the Guardian.
“Though your point is well-taken, halfling,” Jeane said, her voice cool and measured. “We’ve all had our fill of tricksters and deceivers in this damned tower. What exactly does this trial entail? And what assurance do we have that accepting it will truly free our companions?”
The silence that followed was heavy with menace. Seraphine felt the arcane energies around her intensify, responding to her own rising anxiety. She knew they couldn’t refuse—knew that doing so would likely seal Halie and Varrika’s fates—but she also understood Jeane’s suspicion all too well.
Merrin spoke up again, her voice barely more than a whisper but sharp with fear and determination. “What happens if we refuse?” The words hung in the air between them, a question they all knew the answer to but none wanted to voice.
The Guardian’s response was slow in coming, each word seeming to echo through the very stone of the cavern: “Refusal is not an option.” Jeane’s wings beat faster, her heart pounding in sync with their rhythm. She knew they had no choice but to accept this trial, no matter how much it reeked of deception.
Seraphine felt a cold sweat break out on her skin as she realized the truth of the situation. They were trapped—trapped by the very magic that had brought them here, trapped by their own need to save their companions. There was no easy way out, no clever plan that would let them avoid this trial.
The ancient being’s voice cut through the tension once more: “Enter now or forever lose those trapped within.” Jeane folded her wings and began to lower herself towards the chasm's edge. Merrin followed suit, her small hands shaking slightly as she gripped the rope. Seraphine maintained her ward even as she descended, the arcane energies crackling around her in a protective cocoon.
As they disappeared into the shadows below, the cavern seemed to hold its breath for a moment before settling back into its ancient silence. The trial had begun—let whatever fate awaited them in the Chasm of Reflections be swift and merciful.
