The stone around them groaned and shifted as the passage collapsed behind them in a cascade of dust and rubble. Seraphine landed hard on her backside, the impact knocking the wind from her lungs and sending her spellbook tumbling from her grasp. She coughed violently, trying to clear the choking dust that filled her mouth and nose, her eyes watering as she blinked rapidly to clear them. As the air began to settle, she could make out their surroundings: a narrow winding passageway lined with ancient carvings that pulsed with a sickly green light. The walls felt warm and almost... alive.

Jeane had managed to land more gracefully, her wings beating once to soften the fall before folding against her back. She quickly scanned their new environment, her crimson eyes narrowed in concentration as she searched for immediate threats or escape routes. "Well," she said dryly, brushing dust from her leather armor with one hand while keeping her other ready near a spell component at her belt, "that was less than ideal." The air here felt thick and heavy, almost resistant to movement, and carried with it the faint but unmistakable scent of decay mixed with something older and more sinister—ancient magic.

Merrin's voice echoed up from below, distant but clear through several layers of stone. "Jeane? Seraphine? Can you hear us?" Heard. The very stones seemed to carry the sound, amplifying it in ways that felt wrong and invasive. Seraphine shivered involuntarily, her fingers instinctively moving to trace protective symbols in the air even as she scrambled back to her feet. "I can hear you," she called back, her voice echoing strangely in the confined space. "We're... we're okay. For now." She retrieved her spellbook, clutching it like a lifeline.

Jeane moved closer to Seraphine, her expression grim. "How far down do you think that fall was?" she asked quietly, her eyes scanning the ceiling above for any sign of instability. The green light from the carvings seemed to pulse faster, as if reacting to their presence or their conversation. "And more importantly," Jeane continued, her voice dropping even lower, "what the hell is this place? These aren't just decorations." She reached out a gloved hand towards one of the pulsing symbols, hesitating just inches away from its surface.

The air around them seemed to thicken further, and Seraphine felt a distinct chill run down her spine. The carvings were definitely more than mere ornamentation—they seemed to feed into something larger, something ancient and deeply wrong. She could feel the ambient magic pressing against her skin, testing the boundaries of her protective wards. "I don't know," she admitted, her voice tight with barely contained fear. "But whatever this is... it's active. And I don't think it wants us here."
