Shadow of the Ancients / Run 010 / Main Story
Round 30 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane steps closer to the gate, her glyphs flare brightly, and the ancient magic of the place responds to her presence. The runes on the gate pulse with an otherworldly energy, responding to Halie's key. Suddenly, a burst of light erupts from the gate, and the words "WARD ENHANCED" appear in flickering, arcane script. The air around them thickens, and the Ward Spirit's presence grows stronger. The ancient Prison Guardian's malevolent gaze fixes on Varrika, its eyes burning with an inner fire. The New Ward Activation intensifies, causing the ground to tremble beneath their feet.
I'll try to use my own magic to... probe the tower's defenses. Find out what we're dealing with before we stumble into its true purpose.
Seraphine's heart pounds against her ribs as she watches Jeane step closer to the ancient gate, the succubus sorcerer's glyphs flaring with dark energy. The air crackles with power, and the runes on the gate pulse in response to Halie's key.
She takes a deep breath, trying to calm her racing thoughts. This is what they came for—the heart of the tower's magic. But now that they're here, so close to unlocking its secrets, Seraphine feels a sudden wave of uncertainty wash over her.
"Ward Enhanced," she mutters, her eyes fixed on the flickering, arcane script that has appeared on the stone surface. "That can't be good."
She turns to Varrika, seeing the dwarf warrior's grim determination. "If we do this... if we try to use the key on those runes... we need to be ready for anything. And I mean anything."
Seraphine's gaze darts to Merrin, who has her crossbow trained on the gate, and then back to Jeane, who is clearly preparing some kind of magical probe. "Jeane," she calls out, her voice tight with urgency, "if you're going to try that spell, be careful. We don't know what kind of defenses this thing might have against direct magical probing."
She turns back to the gate, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns of the Tharrosian runes. "The key... it must be more than just a physical object. It's attuned to this system somehow. If Halie uses it on those runes, it could activate a whole new set of wards or trigger some kind of response we're not ready for."
Seraphine's mind races as she tries to piece together the puzzle before them. "Maybe... maybe we should try a softer touch first? See if there's another way to interpret the runes without directly engaging with them. We could try scrying on them, or using a divination spell to see what they're meant to do."
She looks around at her companions, her expression showing both concern and determination. "Whatever we decide to do, we need to be united. One wrong move here could bring the whole tower down on our heads. Or worse—release something far more powerful than what's already guarding this place."
Seraphine's eyes finally settle on Halie, who is still clutching the key with a mixture of hope and fear. "Halie," she says gently, "your key is important. Maybe the most important part of this whole puzzle. But we need to be smart about how we use it. Are you ready for what that might mean if it works?"
closes her eyes for a moment, feeling the cold weight of the key against her palm. The air around them tastes wrong—like old iron and decaying magic—and every instinct is screaming at her to run. But this is exactly why they came here. To face the darkness head-on. "Wait," she says softly, opening her eyes to meet Jeane's crimson gaze across the circle of anxious faces. "Before we start throwing keys at angry gates or probing them with dark magic, can we try something... simpler?" Halie kneels down carefully, setting the key on the ground in front of her before pulling out a small bottle of holy water from her pack. "If these runes are truly ancient Tharrosian," she explains to Seraphine, "then maybe they'll respond to something purer." Halie uncorks the bottle with shaking hands and pours a small circle of blessed water around the key. The liquid hisses as it touches the stone, sending up wisps of steam that smell strongly of ozone and fresh earth. "Maybe," she continues, her voice barely audible, "if we try to communicate with them through something... less aggressive than arcane probes or direct engagement, we can learn more without awakening whatever sleeps beyond this threshold." The holy water continues to sizzle and bubble around the key, which seems to pulse faintly in response. Halie leans closer, her brow furrowed as she studies the shifting patterns. "See?" she says after a moment, looking up at the others with an expression caught between hope and terror. "It's responding already. Not violently—just... differently." The runes on the gate seem to dim ever so slightly where the holy water touches them, while the key itself grows warmer in Halie's hand. "Let me try something," she suggests, her voice barely more than a whisper now. With trembling fingers, Halie reaches out and gently traces one of the runes with the tip of her finger—careful to avoid direct contact with the stone itself. The gesture is less an activation and more a plea for understanding. "Please," she murmurs, not to the others but to something deeper in the earth—as if addressing the tower itself through layers of time and dust and forgotten magic. "Tell us what you want. What you need. Help us understand this place so we don't—" She cuts herself off, swallowing hard before continuing, "—so we can all leave here alive."
The holy water continues to bubble and hiss around the key, which pulses with a soft blue light that seems almost alive. For a moment, Halie thinks she sees words forming in the steam—the same arcane script that appeared earlier but now clearer, more defined. She blinks rapidly, trying to focus on the shifting patterns. "Wait," Halie hisses urgently, leaning even closer. "I think it's... talking back?" Her heart hammers against her ribs as she stares at the dissipating mist, desperate to make out whatever message the ancient magic is trying to send them before it fades completely into nothingness.
Merrin's eyes narrow as she watches Halie kneel before the ancient gate, pouring holy water around the mysterious key. The halfling scout's fingers twitch at her side, aching to grab a weapon or flee from this place of old magic and dark purpose. But she forces herself to stay still, watching intently as the runes on the gate respond to Halie's touch.
The air crackles with power, and Merrin feels the fine hairs on the back of her neck stand up. This is beyond anything she's ever faced before—an ancient magic that seems to recognize their presence, to respond to their very breath. It's terrifying and exhilarating all at once.
Merrin's gaze darts to Jeane, seeing the succubus sorcerer's glyphs flare in sync with the runes on the gate. She feels a sudden surge of unease, remembering the way Jeane's magic has already shifted and changed since they entered these accursed woods. What might her spells do here, in a place where the very stones seem to be alive with power?
She turns to Varrika, seeing the dwarf warrior's grim determination as she grips her greatsword. Merrin knows that look well—the look of a fighter preparing for battle, even when the foe is not yet clear. She feels a sudden rush of gratitude for the dwarf's strength and bravery, even as her own heart races with fear.
And then there's Seraphine—always so full of knowledge, so eager to decipher the secrets of this place. Merrin watches as the wizard's eyes dart over the runes, her brow furrowed in concentration. She wonders what hidden truths Seraphine might be seeing in those ancient patterns, and whether they spell doom or salvation for them all.
Finally, her gaze settles on Halie—the halfling cleric who seems to have such a strange connection to this place and its magic. Merrin feels a flicker of concern as she watches Halie trace the runes with trembling fingers, murmuring words that sound almost like a prayer. What might this key unleash if used in the wrong hands? What might it do to Halie herself, to her mind and soul, to be so close to something so ancient and powerful?
Merrin's hand tightens on the hilt of her dagger as she feels the weight of the key in Halie's palm. This is a moment of great risk—and great opportunity. One wrong move could bring the whole tower down on their heads. Or worse—release something far more powerful than what's already guarding this place.
But Merrin knows that they have no choice but to proceed. They've come too far, sacrificed too much, to turn back now. And so she takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever may come. Whatever lies beyond this gate, whatever ancient evils they may face, Merrin is ready to fight for her friends—and for the chance to survive this accursed place with their minds and souls intact.
Varrika's eyes narrow as she watches Halie kneel before the ancient gate, pouring holy water around the mysterious key. The dwarf warrior's grip tightens on her greatsword, her knuckles white against the worn hilt. This is beyond anything they've faced before—a magic so old and powerful that it seems to recognize their very presence.
She feels a surge of unease as she watches the runes on the gate respond to Halie's touch, pulsing with an otherworldly energy that makes her skin crawl. This is not the kind of magic that can be easily controlled or contained. It is something primal, ancient—something that could just as easily destroy them as grant them what they seek.
Varrika's gaze darts to Jeane, seeing the succubus sorcerer's glyphs flare in sync with the runes on the gate. She feels a sudden rush of fear, remembering the way Jeane's magic has already shifted and changed since they entered these accursed woods. What might her spells do here, in a place where the very stones seem to be alive with power?
She turns to Merrin, seeing the rogue's eyes narrow as she watches Halie work. Varrika knows that look well—the look of a fighter preparing for battle, even when the foe is not yet clear. She feels a sudden rush of gratitude for the halfling's strength and bravery, even as her own heart races with fear.
And then there's Seraphine—always so full of knowledge, so eager to decipher the secrets of this place. Varrika watches as the wizard's eyes dart over the runes, her brow furrowed in concentration. Whatever lies beyond this gate, whatever ancient evils they may face, Varrika is ready to fight for her friends—and for the chance to survive this accursed place with their minds and souls intact.
She steps forward, her greatsword held at the ready as she watches Halie work. "Careful now," she growls, her voice low and gruff. "We don't know what we're dealing with here. But whatever it is—we face it together. All of us, as one."
Varrika's eyes meet Halie's, her gaze steady and unwavering. "You've got the key," she says softly. "But we've all got something to bring to this fight. So let us help you—let us share in whatever comes next. For good or ill, we face it together."
With that, Varrika falls back into a defensive stance, her greatsword held at the ready as she waits for Halie's next move. The dwarf warrior may be gruff and direct, but she knows that in a place like this... sometimes the only way out is through.
