The air grew thick and oppressive, heavy with an otherworldly energy that made every breath feel like swallowing dust. The tower's ancient magic pulsed through the stones, seeping into the very atmosphere—an active, hungry thing that didn't just defend the entrance but tasted the essences of those who approached.

Halie stood frozen, her cleric's training warring with primal fear. The ward spirit's tendrils still probed at her mind, insistent and unsettling. She gripped her holy symbol tighter, feeling its cold metal against her palm, utterly useless against this particular brand of corruption. Her blue-grey eyes darted between the ominous gate and her companions—Merrin readying her crossbow with practiced ease, Varrika's scarred face set in determined fury, Jeane's arcane energy flickering dangerously around her succubus form.

Varrika charged forward with a roar, her mace raised high. The dwarf woman was made of sturdier stuff than most—muscle and iron will against the encroaching darkness. But even she felt the wrongness of this place seep into her bones, leaving a lingering chill that had nothing to do with the stone temperature.

Jeane's spell fizzled mid-cast, her concentration shattered by some unseen interference. She cursed under her breath, crimson eyes narrowing as she glared at the ceiling where her arcane senses had detected... something. A presence? A counter-spell? The air crackled with residual energy as she quickly recovered and unleashed a targeted blast at the lead skeleton emerging from the wall's new maw.

Merrin aimed carefully, her rogue's instincts screaming warnings even as her fingers moved by muscle memory alone. The glyph on the tree trunk pulsed with dark energy—something ancient and probably terrible—and she knew without question that messing with it was a bad idea. But sometimes, the bad ideas were the only ones available.

Seraphine felt a chill trace its way down her spine, watching the horde of skeletal creatures crawl from the darkness. Her sharp gaze flicked between the advancing undead and Jeane's arcane sensor sweep—something was wrong there, something off about the sorceress's concentration breaking so suddenly. The elf scholar raised her mace, runes glowing with borrowed divine light, but her mind raced with calculations of ward magic and containment spells.

The air grew heavier still, thick with power that made breathing laborious. And beneath it all, a low chuckle echoed from somewhere deep within the tower's depths—a reminder that whatever ancient evil guarded this place, it was very much awake now.
