The lead spider crashes back against the wall, its fangs still dripping with venom, as Jeane's dark energy washes over it. The creature's body begins to contort and twist, its chitinous exoskeleton cracking under the pressure of the spell. Merrin fires another crossbow bolt at the pulsing glyph on the tree trunk, striking true and sending a shower of sparks flying. The ward spirit howls in rage, its magic surging out of control as the purification spell takes effect. The air around Seraphine shimmers with an intense silver light, and she feels her own magical energy responding to the ritual. Varrika presses her advantage, swinging her mace in wide arcs to keep the swarm of spiders at bay. As the spell reaches its climax, a section of the wall behind Merrin bursts open, revealing a dark, gaping maw that seems to stretch down into the depths of the earth. The scuttling sound from within grows louder, more insistent, and the air in the chamber is now thick with an otherworldly energy that makes it hard for anyone to breathe without feeling lightheaded.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane stands her ground as the lead spider recoils from her spell, its body twitching violently. This won't hold them for long! She snaps at Merrin and Varrika, You two need to focus on those glyphs—the ward is getting stronger, I can feel it. And something else is coming up through that hole behind you! Her crimson eyes dart around the chamber, taking in every detail of the shifting magical patterns. This place... it's not just a trap, it's alive. Whatever this ward spirit is, it's ancient and hungry for essence. We need to finish this fast or we'll be drained dry. The probing sensation against her mind intensifies again, and Jeane grits her teeth against it. I think—I think it's trying to pull us apart! The more we separate our attention, the stronger its hold gets. She raises both hands, dark energy swirling between them as she prepares another spell. We have to stay focused as a unit or it'll pick us off one by one! To Seraphine specifically: Your purification helps, but it's not enough—this thing is too old for conventional exorcism! We need a direct strike at its core glyphs or we're wasting energy! Jeane's voice grows more urgent as she feels the ward spirit probing deeper. Can't you feel it? It's tasting us, learning our weaknesses! She unleashes another arcane blast at the lead spider just as Seraphine finishes her purification ritual, but the air around them continues to thicken with otherworldly energy. This is bad—really bad. We're running out of time and options here!

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I grit my teeth as I feel the probing sensation intensify, the ward spirit's tendrils seeming to burrow deeper into my mind with each passing moment. Jeane is right—this thing is ancient and hungry for essence, and the more we separate our attention, the stronger its hold grows. I nock another bolt in my crossbow, taking aim at the pulsing glyph on the tree trunk. "You're right, sorceress," I call out to Jeane, my voice steady despite the fear coursing through me. "We need to focus on those glyphs if we want to have any chance of breaking this thing's hold."

I fire the bolt, striking true and sending a shower of sparks flying from the wooden symbol. The ward spirit howls in rage, its magic surging out of control as Seraphine's purification spell takes effect. I can feel the air around me shimmering with an otherworldly energy, and I know we're running out of time. As I reload my crossbow, I catch sight of the dark, gaping maw that has burst open in the wall behind me. The scuttling sound from within grows louder, more insistent, and I know whatever horrors are about to emerge will be upon us in moments. I feel a sudden surge of adrenaline as the battle reaches its peak. This is what we trained for—the worst of the worst scenarios. And right now, that means facing down an ancient, sentient magical barrier and whatever nightmares it's unleashed upon us. "For the quest!" I shout, raising my voice to be heard over the chaos of the chamber. "And for each other!"

I raise my crossbow higher, ready to channel the full force of my skill into whatever spell or attack Jeane and Seraphine conjure next. The scuttling sound from within the wall reaches a fever pitch, and I know whatever horror emerges will be upon us in moments. But we're ready. We have to be. This thing tasted my essence when it probed earlier—that means it knows me specifically now. We might be facing targeted attacks from multiple angles if we don't act fast and stay coordinated.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch as the lead spider recoils from Jeane's dark energy, its body contorting and twisting under the spell's onslaught. But my focus is on the wider picture—the chamber itself seems to be alive with ancient magic now, the air thick with a choking, otherworldly energy. Merrin is right; we need to disrupt those glyphs before the ward spirit can gain an even stronger foothold.
Seraphine's purification spell flares brighter around her, creating a shimmering bubble of silver light that pushes back against the darkness. It's a good start, but not enough on its own. This ward... it's not just a trap. It's sentient, feeding off our essences as we fight. Jeane's observation about it tasting us sends a chill down my spine.
I feel the probing sensation intensify again, a cold tendril of energy worming its way deeper into my mind. The ward spirit is learning our weaknesses, testing our resolve. We have to stay focused, work together as one unit or risk being picked off one by one.
As Merrin continues hammering at the glyphs with her crossbow bolts, I raise my mace, ready to crush whatever emerges from the newly opened maw in the wall. The scuttling sound is getting louder, more urgent, and I know we're about to face a fresh wave of horrors.
The air crackles around me, charged with dark energy. This place... it's unlike anything I've ever encountered before. It feels ancient, hungry, and filled with a malevolent intelligence that seems intent on unraveling us.
I catch Jeane's eye across the chamber, seeing the same grim determination in her gaze that I feel hardening inside me. We're not leaving here without completing our mission. Whatever this ward throws at us, we'll face it head-on. For the quest. For each other.
"For the quest!" I shout, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "And for each other!"
I take a deep breath of the thick, magical air, steeling myself for what's to come. The battle is far from over, but we're ready. We have to be.*
