Round 19

Phase: escalating

The glyphs pulsed hungrily, drawing power from something deeper within the earth. Merrin fired another bolt at the tree trunk, the shaft embedding itself deep into one of the pulsing symbols. The glyph cracked audibly, and for a moment it seemed the flow of power might break—but then it repaired itself with a sickening squelch, the magic visibly thicker now than before. "Shit!" Merrin hissed, already nocking her next shot. "These things are alive—they're repairing damage!"
Jeane's eyes flared crimson with arcane power, her hands weaving an intricate sigil as dark energy crackled around her fingers. The lead spider crashed back against the wall, its fangs still dripping with venom, as Jeane's spell washed over it. The creature's body began to contort and twist, its chitinous exoskeleton cracking under the pressure of the spell.
"You two need to focus on those glyphs—the ward is getting stronger, I can feel it," Jeane snapped at Merrin and Seraphine. "And something else is coming up through that hole behind you!" Her crimson eyes darted around the chamber, taking in every detail of the shifting magical energies that now seemed to coat every surface.
I grit my teeth as I felt the probing sensation intensify, the ward spirit's tendrils seeming to burrow deeper into my mind with each passing moment. Jeane was right—this thing was ancient and hungry for essence, and the more we separated our attention, the stronger its hold grew. "You're right, sorceress," I muttered, taking careful aim at the next glyph on the tree trunk. The bolt struck true, embedding itself into the pulsing symbol with a satisfying crack—but once again, the ward magic visibly thickened and repaired the damage.
Seraphine's sharp eyes narrowed as she watched the exchange, her fingers already tracing arcane patterns in the air. "This is beyond simple warding magic," she said, her voice tight with concern. "The very structure of this chamber seems to be alive with power—we're dealing with something far more dangerous than mere glyphs." She took a step back, maintaining a wary distance from both the wall and the shifting magical energies that now seemed to coat every surface.
Jeane's spell had bought them some time, but it was clear that they needed a more permanent solution. The ward spirit was growing stronger with each passing moment, its tendrils probing deeper into their minds and bodies in search of essence. And now there was something else emerging from the hole in the floor—something large and chitinous, its movements suggesting a creature far more dangerous than mere spiders.
"We need to break those glyphs completely," Jeane growled, her eyes still blazing with arcane power. "But I don't know how—this thing is feeding on our fear and uncertainty." She glanced at Merrin and Seraphine, her expression showing both determination and concern. "We need to work together if we're going to survive this."
Merrin nodded grimly, already nocking another bolt. "I have an idea," she said, her voice low and intense. "If we can't break the glyphs directly, maybe we can overload them with energy—flood them with magic until they short-circuit." She looked at Seraphine. "Can you channel a powerful arcane blast into one of those symbols? If we hit it hard enough, maybe we can overwhelm its repair mechanisms."
Seraphine hesitated for only a moment before nodding. "I can try," she said, her fingers already moving in complex patterns as she began to weave a spell. "But be warned—if this goes wrong, we could unleash even more power than we're dealing with now." She took a deep breath, focusing her will. "Stand back—I'm going to need room to cast this properly."
Jeane moved to stand beside Merrin, her eyes still fixed on the shifting magical energies that coated the chamber walls. "What if we combine our efforts?" she suggested. "I can try to disrupt the ward's connection to those glyphs while Seraphine overloads one of them—maybe we can create a feedback loop that collapses the entire thing."
Merrin considered this for a moment, then nodded slowly. "It's risky," she admitted, "but it might just work." She glanced at Seraphine. "Can you target one specific glyph while Jeane works on the overall ward?"
Seraphine closed her eyes briefly, her face showing concentration as she probed the magical structure of the chamber. When she opened them again, there was a new determination in her gaze. "Yes," she said firmly. "I believe I can pinpoint one particular symbol that seems to be the nexus for most of this power—if we can overload that one, it might indeed collapse the entire ward."
"Then let's do it," Jeane growled, her hands already beginning to move in intricate patterns as she started weaving a complex arcane spell. "Merrin, you take aim at that nexus glyph—I'll focus on disrupting the ward's connection to this realm." She paused, her crimson eyes meeting Merrin's and Seraphine's in turn. "Whatever happens, we stick together—no matter what this thing tries to throw at us."
Merrin and Seraphine nodded in unison, their expressions showing both determination and apprehension as they prepared for the next phase of their desperate gambit. The air crackled with arcane energy as Jeane began her spell, dark tendrils of power swirling around her fingers and coalescing into a complex sigil that seemed to draw on forces beyond this world.
Merrin moved into position beside Seraphine, her crossbow at the ready as she sighted down the shaft towards the designated glyph. The pulsing symbol seemed to throb with malevolent energy, tendrils of dark magic already reaching out towards them in anticipation of their next move.
Seraphine began her own incantation, her voice low and steady as she channeled arcane power into a massive ball of pure magical energy that crackled and sparked between her outstretched hands. The air around them seemed to shimmer and distort as the combined power of all three women began to build, the very fabric of reality seeming to groan under the strain.
Jeane felt the ward spirit's tendrils probing deeper into her mind, trying to wrest control away from her as it sensed the impending danger. She gritted her teeth and redoubled her efforts, forcing the arcane energies she commanded into a complex pattern that began to unravel the very structure of the ward itself.
Merrin felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead as she held her aim steady, the magical energies swirling around them making it difficult to focus. She could feel the glyph's malevolent presence looming larger in her mind with each passing second, but she refused to let fear control her now—this was their only chance.
Seraphine's voice rose in pitch as she poured more and more power into the arcane blast between her hands, the ball of energy growing larger and more unstable with each passing moment. She knew that if this went wrong, they could all be consumed by the backlash—but there was no turning back now.
The air crackled with ozone as Jeane's spell reached its climax, dark tendrils of arcane power snaking out from her hands to wrap around the entire ward structure like a constrictor. The glyphs on the walls began to shimmer and distort, their pulsing rhythm becoming erratic as the ward's connection to this realm began to fray.
Merrin pulled the trigger, the crossbow bolt streaking through the air with unnatural speed towards the designated nexus glyph. The shaft struck true, embedding itself deep into the symbol just as Seraphine released her arcane blast.
The ball of magical energy slammed into the already-weakened glyph with devastating force, and for a moment it seemed that nothing had changed. Then, with a sound like shattering glass mixed with a scream of pure rage, the entire ward structure collapsed in on itself.
Magical energies erupted from every surface in the chamber, swirling and colliding in a chaotic vortex that threatened to tear reality apart at its seams. Jeane, Merrin, and Seraphine clung to each other for dear life as the storm raged around them, the very air seeming to scream with the release of ancient power.
And then, as suddenly as it had begun, it was over. The chamber fell silent except for the sound of their own ragged breathing, the glyphs on the walls gone and the oppressive magical pressure lifted. They stood there for a long moment, hearts pounding and bodies trembling from the exertion, before slowly releasing each other and looking around at the changed surroundings.
The hole in the floor was now closed, sealed by some unknown force as if the very earth had healed itself in response to the ward's destruction. The chamber seemed somehow... cleaner now, the ancient malevolence that had permeated every surface gone without a trace.
Jeane let out a long breath, her eyes still glowing faintly with residual arcane energy. "Well," she said, her voice hoarse but steady, "I think we just pissed something off royally."
Merrin sheathed her crossbow with shaking hands, a grim smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "At least it worked," she replied, glancing around at the now-quiet chamber. "But I have a feeling this is far from over—whatever was behind that ward isn't going to take kindly to being disturbed."
Seraphine nodded in agreement, her sharp eyes already scanning the room for any sign of lingering magical residue or new threats. "Indeed," she said, her voice tight with both relief and apprehension. "We've broken the lock, but now we must face whatever lies beyond." She met Jeane's gaze, a flicker of unease passing between them. "And I fear our friend Varrika may have been... affected by this release of power."
As if on cue, a low groan echoed from somewhere deeper within the tower—followed by the unmistakable sound of something large and chitinous moving through the corridors beyond their current chamber.
Jeane's eyes narrowed, her hands already beginning to glow with arcane energy once more. "Then we'd better move quickly," she said, her voice hard with determination. "Because whatever that is, it sounds like it's coming this way—and I have a feeling our fun has only just begun."
