Jeane’s crimson eyes narrowed as she studied the pulsating runes covering the ancient gate. The violet glow cast eerie shadows across her pale features, highlighting the sharp angles of her cheekbones and the delicate curve of her horns. Her dark leather wings twitched restlessly, a subtle betrayal of her inner tension despite her outwardly calm demeanor. She circled the gate slowly, letting her fingertips brush against one of the stones.

“Fascinating workmanship,” she murmured, more to herself than the group. “These aren’t just symbols—they’re keys to a much larger spell.” The magic here is… alive. It’s responding to us already, even if we haven’t triggered any—”

Her words were cut short by a faint creaking sound, followed by the soft whisper of leaves rustling against the ancient gate. The air seemed to vibrate with anticipation as the magic pulsing from the runes intensified, casting an eerie glow on the weathered stones.

Halie moved closer to Merrin, kneeling beside her to examine the crack more closely. “You’ve got good eyes,” she murmured, running her fingers along the stone’s edge with care. The chill made her shiver slightly—I can feel the wrongness of it, seeping into the ground like poison. “But this… it feels deliberate.” She glanced up at Merrin, then around at the others. “It might be a trap to pull us closer, or it could be a genuine weakness in the ward.”

Merrin nodded slowly, taking in everyone’s input. Halie’s right—we can’t just charge in here. And Varrika’s impatience… well, that’s understandable, but we need to be smart about this. She turned back to the crack, kneeling down and examining it more closely. The violet glow seemed to intensify as she moved closer, pulsing like a heartbeat.

“Alright, let’s try this,” she murmured, pulling out a length of rope from her pack. “I’ll tie this to the end and we can see if anything moves when we tug.” She looped the rope around the stone edge carefully, then gave it a gentle pull.

Seraphine crouched down beside Merrin, peering into the crack with intense focus. The violet glow seemed to pulse more frantically now, like a trapped heart beating against its cage. “A hidden mechanism,” she murmured, her voice dropping to a near whisper. She reached out a hand, stopping just short of touching the stone where the rope disappeared. “This could be our key,” she said, her words measured and thoughtful. She looked up at Halie—*

Varrika crouched down beside Merrin, peering intently at the crack in the stone. “Alright, let’s see what we’ve got here,” she muttered, her gravelly voice hushed with anticipation.* She reached out a calloused hand, brushing against the edge of the crack. The chill from within sent a jolt up her arm, but she didn’t flinch away.
