The stone passage stretched ahead, the air growing thick and cold as they descended deeper into the tower's belly. The walls here were different—smooth stone covered in intricate carvings that seemed to glow faintly in the dim torchlight, each symbol pulsing with an inner light that matched the distant thrumming that had become a constant companion on their journey.

Jeane moved ahead with purpose, her voice echoing back sharply. "Come on, we don't have time for hesitation." The words hung in the air, a mix of impatience and something else—an eagerness that bordered on recklessness. Merrin followed close behind, her mace held ready, every shadow examined with the keen-eyed suspicion of someone who trusted nothing they couldn't see clearly.

Halie brought up the rear, her steps hesitant despite her best efforts to keep pace. The silver cross at her neck felt heavy, a weight that had grown heavier still after the events upstairs. She could feel it—the ancient power coiled in these walls, the malevolent presence that seeped into every crack and crevice like a living thing. It knew her now, knew the power of her faith through the conduit of that simple silver symbol.

"Stay close together," she called out, her voice barely more than a whisper despite her efforts to sound brave. "And for God's sake, don't touch anything unless you have to." The words felt hollow even as they left her mouth—how could they avoid touching anything in this place? Every surface seemed alive with dormant magic waiting to be awakened by careless hands.

The staircase ended at a heavy wooden door, its surface covered in more of the glowing symbols. Merrin approached it cautiously, running her fingers over the carvings with barely a touch. "More wards," she muttered. "And they're active." She glanced back at Halie, her expression showing both frustration and resignation. "Your friend's little prayer party upstairs seems to have woken up half the neighborhood."

Halie felt a fresh wave of guilt wash over her—Jeane had only wanted to protect them, to give them a chance. But at what cost? The entity that now coiled around her holy symbol wasn't something she could easily banish again. It had tasted her power and found it... delicious.

The sound of something scraping against stone echoed from deeper within the chamber beyond the door—a sound like claws on rock, growing louder with each passing moment. Merrin's grip tightened on her mace. "Great," she hissed. "More company."
