Round 90 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane's arcane light illuminates the group, the Liminal Wretch takes a step back, its eyes fixed warily on Halie and her silver cross. The creature's growl deepens, and it begins to circle around the group, its movements cautious but deliberate. Merrin's mace swings through the air, striking the ground with a resounding crash as she tests her aim against the Liminal Wretch. The creature pauses, its gaze darting between Merrin and Halie, before continuing its slow circuit around the group. Jeane watches with an intensity that borders on excitement, her fingers twitching with anticipation. Halie stands firm, her eyes locked onto the Liminal Wretch as if willing it to comply with their test of faith. Suddenly, the ground beneath them gives a faint creak, and a section of the ancient stone floor slides open, revealing a narrow passageway beyond. The Liminal Wretch's growl rises to a shriek as it realizes its chance for escape is slipping away.
Ah, yes... because of course the one thing I need right now is for our connection to the memory tools to fail. Typical. Just when you think you might actually get a useful piece of information, the technological equivalent of a wet blanket gets thrown over everything. Fine then—if I can’t rely on perfect recall, I’ll just have to trust my own instincts and observations instead. Which, let’s be honest, is probably more reliable anyway given how often those tools seem to be glitching out lately. I turn back to Halie with a smirk that doesn't quite reach my eyes. Well, well... looks like your little test of faith actually worked—at least for now. Who would have thought? Maybe there's something to all this 'unity' nonsense after all. My tone drips with sarcasm as I gesture dismissively at the retreating Liminal Wretch.
But don't let it go to your head, little cleric. One success doesn’t mean we're suddenly best friends or that I buy into this whole 'teamwork makes the dream work' philosophy. We're stuck in an accursed tower with God knows what lurking around every corner—we need more than positive vibes and group hugs to get out of here alive. I eye the newly opened passage warily, my wings instinctively tensing as I prepare for whatever fresh horror might emerge. That said... you did manage to pull off something useful there. Against all odds, even. So I suppose that deserves a modicum of... not respect, exactly, but at least recognition. My gaze flicks back to Halie, assessing her reaction with a mixture of calculation and grudging admiration. Just don't expect me to start singing kumbaya or any of that sentimental nonsense. We're here for one reason and one reason only—retrieve that damn sword before something even worse shows up looking for trouble. I take an aggressive step forward, the magical restraints at my wrists glinting ominously in the torchlight as if responding to my barely restrained impatience. So let's move out before whatever’s down there decides we're sitting ducks. And next time? Maybe try using a bit less faith and a lot more firepower—at least then we might actually stand a chance against whatever fresh hell awaits us. Without waiting for a response, I stride towards the opening, my movements fluid despite the magical bindings. Coming or not? Because standing around debating the merits of unity isn't going to get us anywhere but dead—and trust me when I say that's the last thing on my to-do list today.
Merrin's eyes dart from Halie to Jeane and back again, her mind racing as she tries to process the sudden shift in their situation. The halfling rogue takes a step back, her mace still gripped tightly in her hand as she watches the Liminal Wretch retreat into the shadows of the newly opened passage.
She feels a sense of unease settle over her like a cloak, the weight of it pressing down on her shoulders as she considers their options. The demon's words echo in her ears, a warning about the dangers that still lurk ahead even as they've managed to overcome this first obstacle.
Merrin's gaze lingers on Halie, a flicker of respect mingling with her usual wariness. The cleric's faith has proven useful once again, but the halfling knows better than to trust in divine intervention alone. There will be more challenges ahead, more tests that they must face together or fall apart trying.
As Jeane strides towards the opening, her wings tensed and ready for whatever fresh horror might emerge, Merrin feels a sense of reluctant agreement wash over her. The demon may be abrasive, but she's not wrong—they need to keep moving if they want to survive this accursed tower and its countless dangers.
With a sigh, the rogue follows after Jeane, her footsteps light and quick as she navigates the narrow passage. Her eyes scan the shadows for any sign of movement, any hint of the threats that surely lie ahead.
Merrin's mind races as she considers their next steps, weighing the risks against the potential rewards of pressing onward. She knows that they are playing a dangerous game, testing the limits of their unity even as they face the unknown.
But there is no going back now—not with the Time-Splitting Sword still waiting to be claimed and the promise of untold riches dangling before them like a carrot on a stick. So she steels herself for whatever challenges may come, her mace at the ready and her senses on high alert.
Let's see what fresh hell awaits us, Merrin thinks to herself as she follows Jeane into the darkness. But one thing's for sure—we're not going down without a fight.
I watch as Jeane strides confidently into the newly opened passage, her wings flared slightly in a display of both readiness and defiance. The demon's words still echo in my ears—a stark reminder of the precarious nature of our alliance and the sheer audacity of what we're attempting to achieve here in this accursed tower.
My own hands tremble slightly as I grip the leatherbound tomes clutched to my chest, the ancient scripts within them suddenly feeling like the only stable anchor in a world turned upside down. Merrin follows close behind Jeane, her halfling form almost invisible in the shadows cast by the demon's passing, but I can see the determined set of her jaw and the way she grips her mace—she knows this is no ordinary adventure.
As Halie steps forward to join them, her silver cross held high like a beacon of hope, a flicker of something—admiration?—crosses my face. Her faith, misguided as it may be in this context, has proven more useful than any spell I could muster in the face of the Liminal Wretch's challenge. Perhaps there is wisdom in such unshakable conviction.
But then my gaze lands on Varrika, the towering halforc who has remained rooted to the spot even as the others move forward. Her expression is one of clear conflict, a silent struggle playing out across her scarred features. It's a look I recognize all too well—the uncertainty of someone torn between duty and instinct, between the call of their past and the demands of the present.
I know that feeling intimately. Every step I take into this dark place feels like a betrayal of everything I once stood for, every spell I prepare a violation of my deepest beliefs. And yet... and yet here we are, united by necessity if not by choice, our disparate skills and natures forced together to navigate an uncharted abyss.
I take a deep breath, the air thick with the scent of old magic and decaying stone, and begin to follow Varrika towards the threshold. My own wings, hidden beneath my robes, ache with a strange anticipation—a long-dormant power yearning to be unleashed even as my mind screams at me to turn back.
This unity Jeane speaks of... it's not what I would choose, but perhaps it is all we have left in this place where the rules seem to shift with every passing moment. If we are to survive, if we are to find that accursed sword and escape this tower with our sanity intact—or at least my research notes—we will need to trust one another. Even if that trust feels like a razor's edge balanced on our fingertips.
As I pass through the low archway, the shadows seem to part before me, revealing a long, winding staircase leading down into even deeper darkness. The sound of Jeane's voice echoes back to us, sharp and demanding, urging us onwards with a mixture of impatience and something almost like eagerness. She truly is a creature unlike any I have ever encountered, a being of pure ambition and raw power, untamed by the conventions of civilization or morality.
I descend the first step, my robes rustling softly in the quiet of the passage, and cast a final glance back over my shoulder at the room we're leaving behind. It feels like a sanctuary now—a place of relative safety compared to whatever unknown horrors await us below. But it's a false comfort; I know better than most that true safety is an illusion in this accursed tower.
As we begin our descent, the air grows colder, heavier with the weight of ancient enchantments and forgotten secrets. Every step feels like a small eternity, each one bringing us closer to whatever fresh hell Jeane has promised lies ahead. And yet... and yet there is a thrill to it, too, a dark excitement born of the forbidden knowledge I seek and the sheer audacity of our mission.
I cling to my tomes like a lifeline as we move deeper into the unknown, my mind already racing with theories about what we might find at the bottom of this winding stair. Ancient traps? Cursed relics? Or something far more terrifying—some truth about the nature of power and the cost of wielding it?
Whatever awaits us, one thing is certain: our unity will be tested to its very limits before this night is through. And if we fail... well, I try not to think too hard about what happens when the Time-Splitting Sword remains lost within these accursed walls.
