Phase: converging

The ancient stone groans under their combined weight, the air thick with an energy that makes Seraphine's skin crawl. She feels the arcane power like a physical weight pressing down on her chest, each breath becoming harder than the last. The entity before them seems to shift, its form wavering between solid and insubstantial as Halie raises her holy symbol high. "Wait!" Seraphine hisses, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Don't just charge in there like Jeane would." She turns to Merrin, her eyes wide with fear but sharp with calculation. "This thing... it's not natural. The magic around it feels old, ancient even. We need to be careful."
Halie nods, her grip tightening on the silver symbol. "I know," she says, her voice trembling slightly. "But we can't just stand here either. Whatever's down there... it's getting louder." She takes a deep breath, steeling herself. "Let me try something first. A prayer, maybe. Something to ward off whatever's coming." Seraphine feels a surge of relief when Halie suggests a more cautious approach. At least someone here understands the dangers of messing with...
The air around them shimmers as Halie begins her prayer, the divine energy clashing with the ancient magic that permeates every stone. The whispers from below grow quieter for a moment, but then they resume their ominous chorus, now mixed with an unmistakable note of hunger. The creature's eyes lock onto Seraphine, and she feels an unnatural chill run down her spine. Its gaze seems to bore into her very soul, and she finds herself frozen in place, her mind racing with the realization that this thing is no ordinary beast.
Varrika steps forward without hesitation, her heavy mace gripped tightly in her hands. The creature's gaze shifts to her, and for a moment, their eyes meet. There is something ancient and hungry in those depths, something that makes Varrika's blood run cold. But she doesn't back down. Instead, she raises her weapon high and brings it down with all her strength, aiming for the creature's torso.
The mace connects with a sickening sizzle, and a cloud of acrid smoke erupts from the point of impact. Seraphine stares in horror as the mace passes right through the creature's body, leaving no visible wound. "Its body... it's like water!" she cries out, her voice filled with both shock and revulsion.
Halie's prayer falters for a moment as she witnesses the futility of Varrika's attack. The holy symbol in her hands dims slightly before flaring back to life, its light now mingled with an ominous purple glow that seems to be seeping into the metal itself. "Something's wrong," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "The magic... it's not responding like it should."
The creature's form begins to shift again, its body seeming to ripple and flow like liquid shadow. It takes a step forward, and the air around it grows colder still. The whispers from below grow louder, now mixed with what sounds like laughter—hollow and mocking. Seraphine feels her heart pounding in her chest as she realizes that their situation has just gone from bad to potentially catastrophic.
"Wait!" she cries out again, her voice barely more than a squeak this time. "We need to think this through! We can't just—"
But her words are cut off as the creature lunged forward with terrifying speed, its form seeming to split into a dozen different tendrils that reach for each of them simultaneously.
