Round 73 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Halie's holy symbol flares with divine light, and the creature recoils slightly, its gaze darting between Halie and Jeane. The air around them shimmers as the magic responds to Halie's prayer, and the whispers from below grow quieter. The creature's unnatural stillness is replaced by a fluid, almost liquid movement, as if it's being pulled back by an unseen force. As Seraphine begins to weave her intricate spell, the creature's eyes lock onto hers, and for a moment, their gazes are like two opposing magnets, drawing energy from the air around them. Merrin and Varrika stand ready, their eyes fixed on the creature, their hands poised over their weapons. The growling sound from beyond the gate grows louder, and the glowing symbols on the walls pulse with a malevolent energy.
I step forward, my heavy mace gripped tightly in my hands. The creature's gaze locks onto mine, and I feel an unnatural chill run down my spine. Its eyes seem to bore into my very soul, as if it can see every scar and battle wound that marks my body. This thing is no ordinary beast, I think, my mind racing with the possibilities. It's a guardian, a test. And if Halie's faith can affect it... then perhaps there’s a way to use force against its magic.
I glance at Merrin and Seraphine, my eyes narrowing as I take in their positions. "Keep your eyes open," I growl, my voice low and threatening. "This thing is playing with us. Testing our resolve." My gaze flicks to Jeane, the demon-blooded sorcerer who has become an unlikely ally in this cursed tower. "Jeane, stay sharp. I have a feeling we're going to need every ounce of power we can muster."
Turning back to the creature, I level my mace at its chest, the head of the weapon glowing with an otherworldly light. "Now," I say, my voice steady despite the fear churning in my gut, "let's see how you like a taste of dwarf-forged steel." With a roar, I charge forward, my mace raised high overhead. The creature's eyes widen in surprise, and for a moment, it seems to hesitate. But then its form begins to shift, the air around it rippling with an unnatural energy. I grit my teeth as I close the distance, my muscles coiled tight with anticipation. This is it, I think, my heart pounding in my chest. The moment of truth. And as my mace comes crashing down, I pray to every god I know that we're about to uncover something... or seal our doom.
The holy symbol burns hot in my hands as I hold it aloft, its light spilling out like liquid silver across Jeane's face and the lip of the pit below. The whispers from the darkness fade to a low hiss as my prayer cuts through them, but the creature doesn't so much as flinch. It simply stands there, watching us with those unnatural eyes that feel like they're peeling back layers I never meant to show. My palms start to ache from the heat, but I don't lower the symbol—won't let it drop even if it scorches my skin completely. Not after what Jeane just did for us.
As Varrika charges forward with a roar, I feel a sudden surge of panic mixed with exhilaration. The creature's form begins to shift, the air around it rippling with an unnatural energy. Its eyes widen in surprise as Varrika's mace comes crashing down, but instead of a satisfying crunch of steel on flesh, there is only a sickening sizzle and a cloud of acrid smoke. "Its body... it's like water!" I cry out, my eyes wide with shock as the mace passes right through the creature's torso, leaving no mark behind. The creature itself seems to be made of liquid shadow, its form flowing around the blow before solidifying again in a different shape entirely. This isn't just some magical beast, I think frantically, my mind racing to analyze this new development. It’s a manifestation of the tower's magic itself, a living test designed to repel intruders.
I quickly weave another spell, this one focused on dispelling illusions and revealing true forms. The air crackles with arcane energy as I cast it directly at the creature, my voice rising in a sharp command. "Reveal!"
To my surprise, the creature's form shimmers and solidifies completely, no longer like liquid shadow but more like polished obsidian. It stands there, utterly still, its eyes now fixed on me with an intense, unblinking stare. A heavy silence settles over the chamber, broken only by the distant growling from beyond the gate. It reacted to my spell, I realize, a chill running down my spine. Perhaps it can be reasoned with after all.
"Wait!" I shout, holding up a hand to stop Varrika's next attack. "I think... I think there might be a way to communicate with it."
I turn to Jeane, my expression one of both excitement and fear. "Jeane, what do you think? This thing—it's not just a beast. It’s a puzzle piece of this place, a test we need to pass before we can go any deeper. And if we can figure out its rules... maybe we can find a way forward."
This is dangerous territory, I admit to myself, my heart pounding in my chest. But it's also the best lead we've had so far. And if Jeane agrees, her demonic knowledge might be just what we need to solve this riddle.
I look back at the creature, its solid form still watching me with that unnerving intensity. "It's testing us," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. "And right now, I think it wants to see what kind of magic a wizard can conjure."
