As Jeane unleashes her dark magic, the pit is illuminated by an eerie green glow. The creature howls in pain and rage, its form writhing as tendrils of shadowy energy envelop it. The air thickens with an unnatural chill, and Jeane's wings quiver beneath her robes. Suddenly, the creature's writhing dissipates, and it takes a step back, its eyes fixed intently on Jeane. The growling subsides, replaced by an unsettling silence. The creature's presence seems to be waiting for something, its gaze burning with an otherworldly intensity. A new detail emerges: the pit's walls begin to glow with an ethereal light, as if in response to Jeane's magic. The whispering grows louder, more urgent, and Halie stirs, her eyes fluttering open. "What's happening?" she whispers, her voice barely audible over the growing din. An immediate pressure arises: Jeane must decide whether to continue to probe the creature's mind or retreat and regroup with the party. The creature's gaze seems to be probing her very soul, searching for weaknesses or vulnerabilities.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I watch in awe as Jeane's dark magic envelops the creature, its form writhing in agony beneath the tendrils of shadowy energy. The pit is bathed in an eerie green glow, and the air thickens with an unnatural chill. As the creature takes a step back, its gaze fixed intently on Jeane, I feel a chill run down my spine. "Careful, Jeane," I call out, my hand tightening on the haft of my mace. "We don't know what this thing is capable of." I turn to Varrika and Seraphine, my expression grim. "Keep your eyes peeled for any other threats. This place is full of tricks and traps."

As Halie stirs in the pit, her eyes fluttering open, I feel a pang of concern. We need to get her out of there as soon as possible, but we can't afford to let our guard down. The creature's gaze seems to be probing Jeane's very soul, searching for weaknesses or vulnerabilities. "Jeane, what do you think?" I ask, my voice hushed. "Is it worth trying to communicate with this thing? Or should we just take it out and move on?"

I wait for her response, my heart pounding in my chest as the tension in the chamber builds. Whatever decision Jeane makes, I know that we're in for a fight. And in this place, every choice could be a matter of life or death.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The creature's gaze bores into my soul like a physical weight, and I feel an unsettling chill crawl down my spine. Its eyes seem to glint with an otherworldly intelligence, studying me as if I'm some kind of specimen—as if it can see right through the layers of demonic allure and dark magic that cloak my true nature. I don't trust this thing. I don't trust anything in this damned tower. But Merrin's question hangs in the air between us, and I know we need to make a decision fast. The whispers from below are growing louder, more insistent—Halie needs us, and time is running out. Stay sharp, I think to myself, my fingers twitching with the urge to unleash another spell. This creature isn't just mindless aggression; it's testing us. And if we let our guard down for even a second... "Merrin," I say, my voice low and controlled, "I don't think this thing is here by accident. It's... calculating something." My eyes narrow as I study the creature's form, the way its muscles ripple beneath patchy fur, the unnatural grace of its movements. "But you're right—we can't afford to let it control the conversation. If it wants to play mind games..." A cold smile curves my lips, and my wings unfurl slightly, ready for action. Suddenly, I snap my fingers and point at Varrika. "You—take the lead on this. Use that holy symbol Halie gave you, and if this thing so much as twitches wrong, I want you to lay into it with everything you've got." My crimson gaze flicks to Merrin then Seraphine in quick succession. "Merrin, keep your eyes open for any more of these things lurking about—this could be a diversion. Seraphine," I fix the wizard with an intense stare, "I want you ready to cast whatever counter-magic or protective ward you can think of at a moment's notice."

The whispers from below grow louder still, and I grit my teeth in frustration. Damn it, Halie—I'm coming. But first, we need to secure this perimeter. "Now," I say, my voice cold and commanding as I turn back to the creature, "let's see what you're really made of. Speak quickly if you have something to say—your time is running out."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand frozen at the edge of the pit, my heart hammering against my ribs as I watch the creature's unnatural stillness. The air crackles with an energy I can feel deep in my bones—arcane power, old and wild. My fingers twitch at my sides, itching to weave a spell, but I hold myself back. This is no ordinary beast; this is something born of dark magic, a guardian or a lure, perhaps both.
As Jeane gives her orders, I nod sharply, my mind already racing through the possibilities. The holy symbol Halie gave us—it could be our key to understanding this creature's purpose, or it could be our undoing if we use it wrong. The whispering from below grows louder still, and I feel a pang of guilt. Halie is down there, helpless, waiting for us to act.
I turn to Seraphine, her sharp gaze fixed on the creature. "Seraphine," I call out, my voice barely above a whisper. "Can you sense anything? Any wards or protections around this thing?" My eyes dart around the chamber, searching for any sign of further threats.
Merrin's question about communication hangs in the air, and I feel a flicker of doubt. To speak to this creature—to engage with its mind—could be a terrible risk. But to ignore it, to let it continue to toy with us... that might be even more dangerous.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever is to come. Whatever decision we make, we have to act fast. Halie's safety depends on it.*
