Phase: converging

The air crackled with ancient magic as Seraphine stepped closer to the portal, her sharp eyes scanning the intricate runes that lined its surface. The tower's darkness pressed in around them, thick and suffocating, but she pushed it aside with sheer force of will. This was no time for fear—though god knows her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"We can't afford to lose her," the elf scholar said, turning to face Jeane. Her voice was low, barely more than a whisper, but it carried the weight of absolute certainty. "Sorceress, we'll need some kind of failsafe—a link between us that will pull her back if things go... wrong." She paused, swallowing hard against the terror that threatened to choke her. "Something to anchor her spirit here, even as her body descends into whatever hell awaits beyond that threshold."
Jeane nodded slowly, her crimson eyes gleaming with understanding. The succubus woman raised her hands, arcane energy already swirling between her fingertips—a pale blue glow that seemed almost too bright in the oppressive gloom of the tower's base. "I can create such a bond," she murmured, her voice barely audible over the distant whispering of unseen entities. "But it will require... something of myself."
She didn't elaborate further, but the implication hung heavy between them. A piece of Jeane's own power, her very essence—sacrificed to ensure Halie's safe return. The cost was steep indeed, but what choice did they have? The paladin had already proven herself invaluable on this quest; without her light and faith guiding them, the party would surely falter in the face of whatever horrors lay ahead.
"Very well," Seraphine said finally, squaring her shoulders as if bracing against an invisible blow. "Do what must be done, Sorceress." Her eyes flickered to Halie—already standing at the threshold of that dreadful portal—and something like regret passed across her features. If only there were another way...
But there wasn't. Not this time. And so, with a heavy heart, Seraphine turned back to Jeane and began to murmur the incantation for their desperate gamble—a spell of binding and protection that would link Halie's soul inextricably to theirs, no matter what happened beyond that threshold.
The air grew thick with power as Jeane wove her magic, threads of pure arcane energy visible only to those attuned to such things. Seraphine watched intently, her own hands moving in subtle patterns that reinforced the binding—adding layers of protection, sealing away potential weaknesses. It was beautiful and terrifying all at once: a dance of power so complex it made her head spin.
At last, with a final word and gesture from Jeane, the spell snapped into place—a shimmering golden thread that stretched from each member of the party toward Halie's waiting form. It pulsed with life, visible only to those who knew where to look... but even the most casual observer would have felt its presence if they'd been paying attention.
And so it was done. The ritual complete, the preparations made. All that remained now was for Halie herself to step willingly into whatever nightmare awaited her beyond that portal—trusting in the bond Jeane had forged and the friends waiting on this side to pull her back when all seemed lost. Seraphine could only pray it would be enough.
Because if not... well, she didn't want to think about what might happen then. The consequences of failing such a delicate operation were unthinkable—both for Halie herself and for the fragile balance they'd managed to maintain within their little group thus far. No, failure simply wasn't an option. They would see this through, no matter the cost.
Even if that cost turned out to be more than any of them had bargained for...
