Jeane's shadow magic crackled around her wrists and ankles, resisting the ethereal tendrils that sought to ensnare her. The ghostly figure before them had taken another step closer, its gaze locked on the succubus woman with an unnerving intensity. "I sense you are not like the others," the entity spoke, its voice a gentle breeze that carried ancient whispers. "You have a... curiosity, a willingness to explore the unknown." Jeane's crimson eyes remained fixed on the apparition, her expression unreadable as she considered its words.
Halie took an involuntary step back, her hand instinctively moving from the hilt of her mace to clutch at the silver cross hanging around her neck. "We're not joining anything—especially not some ancient ritual that requires..." The cleric's voice trailed off, unable to articulate the horrific implications aloud. Instead, she turned to face each of her companions in turn, her blue-grey eyes filled with both fear and determination. "You may be reckless sometimes," Halie addressed Merrin directly, her tone measured but firm, "but you're no fool—and neither am I. This feels wrong on every level. Ancient magic that demands human lives? That's not the kind of power we should be messing with."
Jeane's lips curled into a sardonic smirk as she responded to Halie's concerns. "You're right—this stinks of ancient manipulation," the succubus woman muttered, her shadow tendrils coiling around her own arms in opposition to the ethereal restraints reaching for her. "But we need to understand what they mean by 'balance' before we can refuse it properly." She raised a hand, and more dark energy gathered at her fingertips. "I'll test the binding spell on one of these figures—if it works, great. If not... well, at least we know what doesn't work."
Merrin nodded sharply in agreement with Jeane's pragmatic approach, even as a cold dread settled into the pit of her stomach. "You're right—we need to know more before we can hope to stop this thing," the halfling scout admitted, her dark eyes darting between the ghostly figures and her companions. She kept her hand firmly on the hilt of her mace, ready to draw it at a moment's notice. "But be careful, Jeane—if these figures are as ancient and powerful as they seem..." Merrin's voice trailed off ominously, leaving the unspoken warning hanging in the air between them.
The mist swirled around them all, its ethereal tendrils seeming to pulse with an ominous energy. The ancient entity before them remained motionless, waiting for their response—a response that could very well determine their fates.
