The mist swirled around them, its tendrils reaching out like ghostly fingers. Varrika felt a chill down her spine as Seraphine's words sank in—they had awakened something ancient and terrible by breaking this contract. Her hand instinctively went to the hilt of her mace, but she knew that this threat was beyond mere steel.

This is beyond us—whatever we're dealing with here, it's not just some simple magical ward or guardian spirit, Jeane said, stepping forward and surveying the swirling mist and the glowing figures within it. She turned to face Seraphine directly, her expression severe. What you said about this being a crossroads... I think you're right. But what kind of ancient evil requires multiple sacrifices to seal its power?*

I nodded slowly as Jeane outlined her plan, my mind racing to keep up with the implications of what we'd just learned. I agree—we need more information before we can hope to stop this thing. My hand tightened on the hilt of my dagger, a nervous gesture that betrayed my unease. But if these figures are as ancient and powerful as they seem... trying to force answers out of one could be incredibly dangerous.

We don't even know what it wants, Merrin pointed out, her voice tight with fear. For all we know, giving it what it asks for might just make things worse.
