Narrator · Narrator

Merrin's dagger flashes in the dim light as she steps forward, her eyes fixed on the corridor ahead. The runes on the wall seem to pulse faster, their glow intensifying as if in challenge. The air grows colder, heavy with magic that presses down on the party from all sides. Suddenly, a low growl echoes from beyond the darkness, and a pair of glowing eyes materialize in the shadows, watching the party with cold calculation.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The growl echoes off the stone walls, making it impossible to tell where it's coming from. I step in front of Merrin instinctively, my wings spreading just a little for protection even though there's barely room in this corridor. The runes pulse faster now, their light harsh and unforgiving. I don't like this. We're blind here—can't see around corners or through solid rock the way some can. And whatever made that sound... it knows we're here. "Everyone," I say, voice low but sharp enough to carry, "form up close. Merrin, stay between Seraphine and me—I want your blade ready for anything that gets past our front line." The arcane energy in my hands feels eager now, too eager. This whole place is a pressure cooker for magic, and it's making mine skittish. I push out a simple ward spell—just enough to create a faint shimmer around us, something to slow down any physical threats that might come our way. It takes more effort than it should, like pushing against a gale, but it holds. "Forward," I say, not because I want to, but because we don't have a choice anymore. The growl sounds again—closer this time—and I feel Merrin shift her weight behind me, ready to move at speed if needed.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up as that growl echoes through the corridor. Whatever made that sound is no ordinary beast—this is a place of magic, and we're trespassing in its domain. My hand tightens on the hilt of my dagger, the worn leather of the grip familiar under my fingers. I've faced down creatures before, but never anything like this. The runes on the walls seem to pulse in time with my heartbeat, their glow casting strange shadows that dance and twist in the corners of my vision. But we're not alone here. Jeane's at my back, her wings spread for protection even though there's barely room to move. Seraphine's eyes are bright with excitement, her staff held ready at her side. And Varrika... well, she looks as nervous as I feel, but that's okay. We all have our strengths. "Alright," I say, my voice low and steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "We stick together, no matter what comes at us. And if something tries to split us up..." I glance at Jeane, a grim smile on my face. "We remind it that we're not so easily separated."

The growl sounds again, closer this time, and I feel the hairs on my arms stand up. But I don't falter. I've faced worse than this in the shadows of the city streets. And with my friends at my side, I know we can face whatever this tower throws at us. So I take a deep breath, my eyes fixed on the darkness ahead, and I step forward. It's time to see what secrets this place is hiding.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the cold air of the tower on my skin, raising goosebumps where the sweat has chilled from our journey. The growl echoes again, deeper now, vibrating in my bones. My staff feels warm and alive in my hands, its magic thrumming against my palms, ready to answer my call.
This isn't a simple beast—this is an ancient power, awakened by our presence here. The runes on the walls pulse with an eerie light, their symbols shifting slightly as if they were written in a living language.
"I can feel it," I say, my voice barely above a whisper but clear enough for the others to hear. "It's not just a creature—it's the tower itself. This place... it's alive." My eyes scan the corridor ahead, trying to make out any shapes in the darkness beyond the reach of our torches.
The air grows colder still, and I wrap my free arm around myself, pulling my robes tighter. Jeane is right—we need to stick together. Whatever comes next, we face it as one unit. My mind races through the spells I know, considering which might be most effective against a magical entity like this.
Suddenly, a shape detaches itself from the shadows at the end of the corridor. It's large, hulking, and moves with a deliberate, predatory grace. Two points of crimson light flare in the gloom—its eyes locking onto us. A deep, guttural snarl rips through the air, raising the fine hairs on my arms.
"Everyone," I say, my voice steady despite the fear coiling in my gut. "Whatever that is... it's not happy to see us." I raise my staff, the crystal at its tip flaring with a soft blue light. It's not much, but it's a warning. A promise of resistance.
"Varrika," I call out, my eyes never leaving the creature. "Get ready with that crossbow. Merrin, stay sharp. Jeane... be ready to shield us if this thing charges." The plan is simple—we buy time, we learn what we can about this threat, and then we find a way past it or through it. There's no going back now.
As the creature begins to advance, its massive form blocking out the dim light from behind, I feel my own power rise within me, hot and ready. We didn't come all this way just to be torn apart by some guardian in the first chamber. No—if this is a test of strength, then we will show it what true strength looks like.
