The air crackled with arcane energy as Jeane traced the shifting symbols on the ancient gate, her crimson eyes fixed on the complex patterns. The temperature dropped several degrees instantly, and a palpable sense of wrongness settled over them all. "These wards... they're beyond anything I've encountered in my studies," Jeane murmured, her voice barely audible over the sudden gust of cold wind that whipped through the clearing. "Each symbol seems to contain layers of meaning, woven together in ways that shouldn't be possible. Whatever power created this barrier, it's ancient and... hungry." She stepped back instinctively, her dark leathery wings half-spreading for balance.

Seraphine nodded gravely beside her, her sharp eyes narrowed as she studied the shifting runes. "I concur with Halie's assessment," the elf scholar said, her voice steady despite the nervous energy that radiated from her. "These wards are not meant to be broken by strength alone. The magic here is... wrong. Twisted. It feels like the kind of power that feeds on fear and despair." She glanced at Merrin, noting the halfling's unease.

Halie, her hand still raised in a ward of divine protection, felt a chill settle over her skin as the temperature continued to drop. "We will face whatever tests you deem necessary," the cleric said, her voice steady despite the dread coiling in her stomach. The guardian spirit's words echoed in her mind: To pass, you must first prove your worthiness by facing the trials within. "But know this—we come not to desecrate your domain, but to right a wrong and prevent further suffering. Guide us as you will."

Merrin felt a surge of unease as the guardian spirit's response sank in. Trials? Worthiness? "Trials?" she echoed, her voice laced with skepticism. "What kind of trials are we talking about here?" Her gaze darted to the shifting symbols on the gate, then back to Halie. She appreciated the cleric's caution, but part of her wanted to simply smash through whatever barrier stood between them and the tower's interior.

The wind died down as suddenly as it had appeared, leaving an oppressive silence that seemed to press in from all sides. The air around them felt thick and resistant, like trying to breathe through water. The temperature continued its slow descent, and a faint, malevolent presence seemed to seep into the clearing itself.
