Phase: escalating

The air grew heavy as they waited for the guardian's response. Jeane cast her protective barrier around them—a shimmering dome of arcane energy that hummed softly in the stillness. Varrika moved forward, her hand resting on her mace hilt, her dwarven instincts screaming danger at the sight of such ancient magic. "Whatever these trials are," she growled, "we need to be ready for anything. If there's a fight coming, I want us positioned to face it head-on." Her eyes flickered over to Merrin, noting her tense stance and ready grip on her weapon.
Jeane turned to Halie directly, her crimson eyes intense. "You must understand—the guardian's silence is far more dangerous than any growl. It means it's deciding our fate right now." Her gaze swept across each of her companions in turn, lingering longest on Merrin. "My protective barrier will shield us from direct magical attacks, but the wards themselves... we need to be careful."
Halie stood before the gate, her hand extended towards the ancient symbols, feeling the dark energy pulse against her fingertips. The sudden silence from beyond was more unnerving than the growling ever was—it felt like they were being watched, judged even. "You're right," she said softly, her eyes fixed on the shifting patterns. "I understand your caution; I've dealt with spirits and entities before, and their sense of time, morality, and purpose is... foreign to us." She took a deep breath, steeling herself. "But we came here for a reason. We can't turn back now."
The air around them grew heavy with anticipation, and the silence that followed was oppressive.
