The darkness beyond the gate shifts, tendrils of shadow mist writhing as if responding to Halie’s raised holy symbol. The air grows colder, and an ancient, rasping voice echoes through the gloom.

“Who... disturbs my slumber? After so long... I hunger... for fresh souls... to fuel my eternal vigil.”

Halie takes a deep breath, her faith evident in her unwavering stance despite the palpable aura of malevolence radiating from the entity.

“We mean no disrespect to your ancient duty,” she says, her voice firm and clear. “But we seek passage through these lands, and your power blocks our path. Will you not speak with us as sentient beings, rather than demanding souls as tribute?”

The shadow seems to coalesce briefly into a vaguely humanoid shape, its form shifting and wavering like smoke. The entity’s voice gains a dangerous edge.

“Sentient... beings? Ha! You are but fleeting sparks compared to my eternal existence.” The voice takes on a mocking tone. “You would offer me conversation? After so long alone? Tell me—what could such tiny lights possibly offer that would justify disturbing the sanctity of my domain?”

Jeane’s expression remains troubled as she listens to the entity’s response, her wings shifting uneasily. She steps closer to Halie, her voice low.

“Be careful, Halie,” she mutters. “Its hunger is real—we must not offer ourselves too readily.”

Varrika nods grimly, her hand tightening on her mace. “Indeed. We need more information before we commit to any course of action.”

Seraphine, her eyes narrowed in concentration, begins to murmur an arcane incantation under her breath. She steps forward slightly, her voice soft but clear.

“We offer no guarantees beyond our own honor,” she says, her words carrying the weight of ancient arcane knowledge. “But surely a being of your power can sense the truth of our intentions?”

The shadow entity’s form flickers, tendrils of mist reaching out as if to caress Seraphine’s extended hand before withdrawing.

“Honor... from mortals?” The voice gains a dangerous edge. “Such concepts mean little to one such as I—eternal, bound to this place by ancient magic beyond your comprehension.”

Jeane steps forward, her expression grave. “We understand the limitations of our own understanding,” she says, her voice carefully measured. “But we are skilled in matters arcane—and perhaps there is some way we might ease the burden of your bindings, or at least pass through without disturbing them?”

The shadow entity’s form flickers again, tendrils reaching out before retracting.

“Ease my... bindings?” The voice takes on a considering tone. “Your kind has always been clever with promises, succubus. But tell me—what could you possibly offer that would justify such a... dangerous proposition?”

Merrin, ever the pragmatist, moves to flank Varrika, her hand still resting on her dagger hilt.

“Careful, Varrika,” she mutters to the fighter. “We don’t know what it might interpret as ‘conversation.’ Could be anything from philosophical debate to... something more intimate.”

The shadow entity’s form solidifies further, taking on the suggestion of ancient robes and a hooded face that seems to stare directly at Merrin.

“And you, little halfling—what wisdom do you bring to this... conversation?”

Halie, sensing an opportunity, steps forward once more.

“We offer no disrespect to your ancient duty,” she says, her voice firm but compassionate. “But surely centuries of solitude must weigh heavily upon even the most powerful spirit? We are here not as intruders, but as... potential companions for a time.”

The shadow entity’s form flickers, tendrils of mist reaching out as if to caress Halie’s extended hand before withdrawing.

“Companionship... after so long alone?” The voice takes on a wistful quality. “Such an offer is... intriguing. But tell me, little light—what guarantee do I have that you truly mean no harm? That this is not merely another ploy to gain access to my tower’s secrets?”

Seraphine, her eyes narrowed in concentration, begins to murmur an arcane incantation under her breath.

The entity’s form solidifies further, taking on the suggestion of ancient robes and a hooded face that seems to stare directly at Seraphine.

Jeane steps forward, her expression grave.

“We understand the limitations of our own understanding,” she says, her voice carefully measured. “But we are skilled in matters arcane—and perhaps there is some way we might ease the burden of your bindings, or at least pass through without disturbing them?”

The shadow entity’s form flickers, tendrils reaching out as if to caress Jeane’s extended hand before withdrawing.

Varrika moves to stand beside Halie and Seraphine, her mace held ready but not raised aggressively.

“I have no desire to disrupt your bindings,” she says, her voice steady and sincere. “But surely after centuries of servitude, even such a powerful spirit might find itself... restless? We offer companionship—conversation—if you are truly alone here.”

The entity’s form begins to swirl more actively, tendrils reaching out before retracting.

“Companionship?” The voice gains a hint of genuine curiosity. “You would offer me... conversation? After so long in solitude?”
