Round 973 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varikka leans against the stone pillar beneath the altar, her eyes fixed on the massive stone structure before us, the ground shudders beneath our feet. The Guardian's single eye glints in the darkness beyond the door, its presence making the air feel thick with tension. Suddenly, the runes on the altar's surface glow brighter, their energy crackling through the air like a lightning storm. The chamber begins to shake, and the pillars start to tremble, threatening to collapse. I grab Varikka's arm, pulling her away from the door just as it swings open, revealing a chasm deep below. "Merrin, look out!" Varikka shouts, her voice trembling with fear as she stumbles backward. The Guardian darts forward, its claws scrabbling against the stone walls as it lunges towards us. I know we can't outrun it now – we need to find a way to stabilize this chamber before it's too late.
Varikka's warning rings out as the chamber begins to shake violently. The ground tremors under my feet, threatening to send me tumbling into the abyss ahead. I feel a rush of adrenaline surge through my veins, heightening my senses and sharpening my focus. The Guardian lunges forward, its claws scrabbling against the stone walls as it leaps towards us with alarming speed. I react on pure instinct, diving to the side just as its razor-sharp talons slice through the air where my head was a mere heartbeat before. "Varikka, grab onto something!" I shout over the cacophony of crumbling masonry and splintering wood. The heavy mace lies within reach, but I dare not risk losing my balance to retrieve it now. I scan the chamber frantically for anything that might provide us with a lifeline in this collapsing deathtrap. My eyes fall upon a series of ancient runes etched into the stone pillars lining the walls. Each one seems to pulse with a faint, otherworldly glow, as if imbued with some long-dormant magical energy. As I watch, the runes begin to flicker and dance, casting eerie shadows across the chamber. I have no idea what these markings might do, but in this moment of desperate need, they may be our only hope. "Varikka, get behind one of those pillars!" I yell, pointing frantically at the nearest rune-engraved stone. "Stay low and cover your head!"
The chamber continues to convulse around us, sending chunks of rock and debris raining down from the ceiling. I can see Varikka struggling to her feet, her injured ankle clearly causing her immense pain as she hobbles towards one of the pillars. She is so close, but the Guardian's relentless onslaught is closing in. I know I must act now, before it's too late. With a burst of speed, I rush forward, positioning myself between Varikka and the oncoming beast. I ready my crossbow, the cool steel familiar in my grasp as I take aim at the Guardian's single gleaming eye.
