Phase: escalating

The chamber shuddered around them, ancient stone groaning under immense pressure. Runes on the altar flared brighter, their light casting stark shadows across Merrin's face as she helped Varikka lean against a trembling pillar. The ground bucked beneath their feet like a restless beast waking from slumber.
Varikka's eyes widened in alarm, her grip tightening on Merrin's shoulder for support. "Merrin! The whole place is coming down!" Her voice barely carried over the grinding stone and cracking masonry. Dust began to rain from the ceiling, each tremor sending more cascading downwards.
The Guardian surged forward with terrifying speed, its single glowing eye fixed on them. Claws scraped against stone as it lunged through the doorway, filling the space with its massive frame. Merrin's reflexes kicked in - years of survival instinct honed by desperate escapes and narrow saves. She threw herself sideways just as the creature's talons slashed through empty air where her head had been moments before.
The momentum carried her stumbling against another pillar, which shook violently under her weight. Merrin barely caught herself, one hand scrabbling for purchase on rough stone while her other arm instinctively wrapped around Varikka to steady her friend despite the halfing's own precarious balance. The ground heaved again, and a crack split open in the floor mere feet away, revealing darkness below.
"We need out of here!" Merrin shouted over the cacophony of collapsing stone. "Now! Before this whole place turns into a tomb!" Her heart hammered in her chest, fear and adrenaline coursing through her veins. The persistent headache from the noxious gas only added to her disorientation, making every movement feel slightly off-balance.
Varikka nodded, face set in determination despite the pain radiating from her injured ankle. "Which way? Everything looks the same!" She tried to shift her weight, wincing as the movement sent a jolt of agony up her leg.
Merrin's eyes darted around the chamber, searching for any sign of an escape route. The altar loomed before them, its surface now pulsing with an eerie blue light that seemed to grow stronger with each passing second. Behind them, The Guardian advanced slowly, methodically, as if confident they had nowhere left to run.
The ground shook again, more violently this time. A section of the ceiling collapsed near the far wall, sending a cascade of stone and dust plummeting into the darkness below. Merrin's stomach twisted with fear - one wrong step meant certain death for both of them. She needed to think fast, to find a way out that wouldn't get them killed by either the collapsing structure or their relentless pursuer.
The sound of rushing water suddenly filled her ears, coming from somewhere nearby. A river? A waterfall? Either way, it offered potential - and immense danger. But staying put meant certain death as the chamber came down around them. Merrin made her decision.
"We follow the water!" she called out, already moving towards where the sound seemed loudest. "It might lead us to a way out... or at least something we can use!" She helped Varikka hop forward, supporting her friend's weight while trying to distribute it evenly across both feet to minimize pain and risk of further injury.
The Guardian roared behind them, its voice echoing through the crumbling chamber. Merrin pushed harder, dragging Varikka with her as they stumbled towards the sound of rushing water. The floor tilted beneath their feet, and another crack split open in the stone mere inches from Merrin's boot. She barely registered it, focused only on putting one foot in front of the other and keeping Varikka upright.
As they approached the source of the sound, a narrow passageway came into view. Water flowed through it with surprising force, spraying outwards as it met the chamber floor. Merrin hesitated for just a moment - the water looked treacherous, and she remembered all too clearly the terror of drowning in the tower's depths earlier. But the alternative was far worse.
"Hold on tight!" she warned Varikka, already moving towards the rushing water. "This is going to be rough!"
They plunged into the torrent together, the force of the current immediately sweeping them off their feet. Merrin clung to Varikka with all her strength as they were pulled deeper into the passage, the sound of roaring water filling her ears and the icy liquid threatening to pull them both under. The last thing she saw before being consumed by darkness was The Guardian's massive form looming over them, its eye burning with malevolent intent as it watched them disappear into the rushing waters.
The current carried them swiftly through twisting tunnels, the sound of crashing water echoing off the walls. Merrin fought to keep her head above water, one arm wrapped tightly around Varikka while her other hand scrabbled for any purchase against the slippery stone. The persistent headache from the noxious gas made it difficult to think clearly, each impact with the rushing water sending jolts of pain through her skull.
Varikka gasped and sputtered beside her, her injured ankle making it nearly impossible to swim properly. Merrin adjusted her grip, trying to support more of her friend's weight while keeping them both afloat. The freezing water sapped their strength with terrifying speed - they needed to find solid ground soon or risk succumbing to hypothermia.
The tunnel opened up suddenly, and they were swept into a vast cavern. For a heart-stopping moment, Merrin thought they'd be plunged over another waterfall, but the current carried them sideways instead. She caught a glimpse of a massive underground lake stretching out before them, its surface churning with whitecaps from the rushing water feeding into it.
"Varikka!" she shouted, her voice barely carrying over the roar of the water. "We need to get out of this current!"
Her friend responded with a weak nod, her face pale and drawn from pain and exhaustion. Merrin spotted a ledge just ahead, partially submerged but offering a chance at solid ground. She aimed for it, using every ounce of strength to angle their bodies towards the edge.
They hit the stone with a jarring impact, water cascading over them as they scrambled to find purchase. Merrin's fingers dug into cracks and rough edges, her muscles burning with effort as she pulled herself up onto the ledge. She reached down immediately, grabbing Varikka's arm and hauling her friend up with desperate strength.
They collapsed side by side on the narrow shelf of stone, gasping for air and shivering violently from the icy water. Merrin rolled onto her back, staring up at the cavern ceiling far above while she tried to catch her breath. The sound of rushing water filled the air around them, a constant reminder of how close they'd come to drowning again.
Varikka lay beside her, her breathing ragged and labored. "Merrin..." she gasped between shivers. "My ankle... I don't think I can move like this."
Merrin propped herself up on one elbow, worry etched across her features as she examined Varikka's injury in the dim light of the cavern. The ankle had already begun to swell, the skin tight and discolored. She bit back a curse - they needed mobility, and Varikka was their strongest fighter.
"It's bad," Merrin admitted, her voice barely carrying over the sound of the water. "But it's not broken. That's something." She began examining the injury more closely, probing gently with her fingers to assess the damage. Varikka hissed in pain but didn't pull away, knowing Merrin needed to understand the extent of the problem.
After a moment, Merrin sat back on her heels, her expression grim. "It's a bad sprain," she said. "You're not going to be able to put weight on it for a while without making it worse." She started pulling off her own wet shirt, using it as a makeshift bandage. "We need to stabilize this and keep the swelling down."
Varikka watched her with tired eyes, resignation settling over her features. "So I'm basically useless now," she said, her voice flat with frustration. "Great timing for our most powerful fighter to go down."
Merrin shook her head firmly as she began wrapping Varikka's ankle with the damp cloth. "You're not useless," she insisted, her fingers working quickly and efficiently. "You're still here, still fighting. We'll figure this out together." She met Varikka's gaze, offering a small, determined smile despite their dire situation.
As Merrin finished securing the makeshift bandage, she glanced around the cavern, taking in their surroundings for the first time since they'd scrambled onto the ledge. The rushing water seemed to come from multiple sources - several smaller tunnels fed into the larger cavern, their currents swirling together to create a network of deadly rapids and whirlpools.
"Where do you think this all leads?" Varikka asked, following Merrin's gaze. Her voice carried a note of wonder despite her pain, clearly trying to focus on anything other than her injured ankle.
Merrin shrugged, still scanning the cavern carefully. "Your guess is as good as mine," she admitted. "But I'd bet it has something to do with the tower's water supply." She pointed towards one particularly large tunnel on the far side of the cavern. "See that? It looks like it might lead back up towards the surface."
Varikka nodded slowly, her eyes following Merrin's gesture. "And the other tunnels?" she asked, curiosity evident in her voice despite the pain.
Merrin's expression turned thoughtful as she considered the possibilities. "They could lead deeper into the tower," she mused aloud. "Or maybe to other parts of the city underground." She glanced back at Varikka, a hint of excitement creeping into her tone despite their precarious situation. "Imagine what we might find if we explored them..."
Varikka managed a weak laugh, shaking her head. "One thing at a time, Merrin," she said. "Let's focus on getting out of here first, yeah?" She shifted slightly, wincing as pain shot through her ankle.
Merrin nodded, immediately refocusing on their immediate problem. She scanned the ledge they occupied, noting its size and stability. It was narrow but seemed solid enough - at least they weren't in immediate danger of falling into the water again.
"We need to rest here for a bit," she decided, settling back against the stone wall behind them. "Let your ankle settle and regain some strength." She pulled out her remaining waterskin, offering it to Varikka. "Here. Small sips - we don't know when we'll find more."
Varikka accepted the skin gratefully, taking a few careful mouthfuls before passing it back. Merrin drank as well, the cool water helping to ease some of the persistent headache that had been plaguing her since their near-drowning experience.
As they rested, Merrin's mind raced with possibilities and concerns. The Guardian was still out there somewhere - she hadn't heard or seen any sign of it since they'd been swept away by the current. But she knew better than to think the creature had given up its pursuit. It would be looking for them, using whatever unnatural senses it possessed to track them down.
And then there was the matter of their current location. They were clearly deep within the tower now, possibly even below ground level given the size of this cavern. The rushing water suggested some kind of massive underground aquifer or water system, which could mean they were closer to the city's central water supply than they'd realized.
The implications were both exciting and terrifying. If they could access the main water system, they might find a way out - or at least a source of fresh water for their dwindling supplies. But exploring such a dangerous area without knowing what they might encounter was risky at best, suicidal at worst.
Merrin glanced at Varikka, who had drifted into an uneasy doze, her breathing still labored from pain and exhaustion. The halfling's friend looked utterly spent, her face pale and drawn in the dim light of the cavern. Merrin felt a surge of protective instinct - she needed to keep Varikka safe, no matter what.
The persistent headache from the noxious gas exposure only added to her sense of unease. Her thoughts felt sluggish, her coordination slightly off-balance even when resting. She knew they couldn't stay here long - every moment wasted increased the risk of The Guardian finding them or the cavern collapsing around them.
But moving with Varikka in this condition was equally dangerous. They needed time to rest, to let Varikka's ankle settle and regain some strength. Merrin settled back against the wall, eyes scanning the cavern constantly for any sign of movement or danger while her mind worked through their options.
The sound of rushing water filled the air around them, a constant reminder of how close they'd come to drowning again - and how precarious their current situation truly was.
