Phase: escalating

The stone beneath them gave way without warning, the floor collapsing inwards with a groan of ancient wood and shifting earth. Merrin tumbled forward, her hands instinctively reaching out to break her fall. She landed hard on her side, the impact knocking the wind from her lungs as she struggled to breathe. Varikka hit the ground beside her, her Heavy Mace clattering away as she let out a pained gasp.
"Varrika!" Merrin managed to choke out between labored breaths, her eyes wide with concern as she looked at her friend. The dwarf was clutching at her ankle, her face contorted in pain as she tried to sit up.
"Are you alright?" Merrin asked, her voice barely audible over the rushing water that now filled half the room.
Varikka shook her head, tears of pain welling up in her eyes. "My ankle," she gasped. "I think it's broken."
Merrin bit back a curse as she scrambled to her feet, the water already lapping at her boots. She knew they needed to move fast, but with Varrika injured and the rising water making every step treacherous, their options were limited.
"Here," she said, offering her shoulder to Varikka. "Lean on me. We need to find higher ground before we're both swept away."
Varikka nodded, wincing as she put weight on her good leg. Together, they began to move, the water swirling around their ankles and threatening to pull them off balance with every step.
As they stumbled through the ankle-deep water, Merrin's eyes darted around the room, searching for any sign of an exit or higher ground. The walls seemed to close in on them, the ancient stonework groaning under the weight of the rushing water.
Suddenly, a section of the wall ahead shifted, revealing a narrow passage that led upwards. Merrin helped Varrika through the opening, her heart pounding as she realized this might be their only chance at survival.
The passage was dark and cramped, forcing them to crawl on hands and knees. As they moved deeper inside, Merrin felt a strange energy emanating from the walls—an ancient magic that sent shivers down her spine.
"What is this place?" Varikka whispered, her voice echoing in the narrow space.
"I don't know," Merrin replied, her eyes scanning the dimly lit corridor ahead. "But it's our best shot at getting out of here alive."
They continued to crawl forward, the sound of rushing water growing fainter behind them. The passage twisted and turned, leading them deeper into the heart of the tower.
As they rounded a sharp corner, Merrin suddenly froze, her hand shooting out to stop Varrika. Ahead, the corridor opened up into a larger chamber, its walls lined with glowing green runes that pulsed with an otherworldly light.
"What is this?" Varikka asked, her voice barely above a whisper as she took in the sight.
"I'm not sure," Merrin replied, her eyes wide with awe and fear. "But I have a feeling we're not alone down here."
The two women exchanged a nervous glance before pressing on, their hearts pounding in unison as they entered the chamber of glowing runes.
